Looking for a new finch cage - any recommendations?

Post by DragonMistral » Wed Mar 23, 2011 11:40 pm

Hi there everyone,

I somewhat recently adopted four zebra finches (two males, two females), one of which I posted about over in the health forums. These finches came in a cage that wasn't very appropriate for two pairs. In January, the males started to get pretty aggressive with one another, so I bought a breeder cage with a divider to keep the two pairs separated but still in contact with one another.

The four are again living peacefully in this cage without the divider. The cage is ~15"Hx15"Wx30"L (longer than it is tall), which seems too small to me for four finches despite the bunch getting along.

I'd like an opinion on these cage dimensions - is this too small for two pairs of finches? If so, do you have cage recommendations for a small flock of finches? I prefer cages that are longer than they are tall to give them ample room to fly horizontally, but I'm having a tough time finding this type of cage in a size much bigger than what I have now.

I'd appreciate any advice! I can take a few pictures and post them up if it would help you all get a feel for what the flock looks like in their cage.

Cheers,

Janice

My breeding cages are 30Lx18Dx18H and I house a single pair in each cage (for breeding purposes). I only put the divider in when I need to catch one. HTH

There are a couple of folks on here who took 2 30" L cages and took one end off of each and joined them together (with zip/cable ties) to make a really nice looooong flight cage. :D

That's a great idea, I think I'm going to do this - thank you for the suggestion!

Do you think it would be better to have an 15x15x60 flight cage that's very long, or a 15x30x30 that doubles the width of what I currently have?

Personally, I'd go with the longer one 15x15x60.

I am also going to do it. A 60" Long Flight would be great. And also wouldn't cost me more.

BTW, I am new in keeping finches. Here in India, there are only two breeds available. Zebra and Societies....

So, Any of the suggestion for this newbie would be oddly helpful.

Thanks.
