Heat lamp help Air Sac Mite Recovery??

Post by G8love4finches » Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:43 pm

Hello...Much to my dismay this morning my Star hen is gasping for air....I put a drop of Iverlux on her and held her close & did hear the "clicking" noise you all talk about....I have put the Iverlux in the water as well....Should I also give her a heat lamp?....She is in a breeding cage with her mate and I feel so bad for her....She looks so sad and opening her mouth when she breathes.....How quickly should I see her breathing improve?....I understand I will be treating her with the Iverlux on her skin for 5 days....I am also doing a preventative treatment on all my birds for 2 days....

I think a heat lamp is good anytime a bird is not fealing good can't hurt just have it at one end so they can move away if they want

:( Too late!....I set up the heat lamp and came back just a few minutes later and she was dead on the cage floor....I am treating all my birds, but this has me really scared.....I watch my birds very closely an don't know how I didn't notice this earlier....I'm reminded of the post where a member treated her canary with Scatt and found it dead in just a few hours....I gave Iverlux at 11 am this morning, found her dead around 2 :30 this afternoon....She was only a year old

Because it seemed to happen so quickly I would consider maybe a respiratory infection and not air sac mites.

Did you examine your other finches?

It seems like the product you used instantly killed (or disturbed) mites and they have choked the respiration system. :| :?

I am going to have to agree with Debbie on this one. One way or the other it sounds as though she was already in respiratory failure when you caught it. :( Being as how you had to catch her to treat her and she was already fragile, I would be thinking more on the side of the shock of the treatment and not the treatment itself.

So sorry for your loss. No matter what the cause, we unfortunately can never bring them back
