Gouldian nodules

This is an example of a white noduled baby that ended up being Normal.
This baby was from a Normal/Blue male and a Silver hen.. fooled me!! I thought it was my first ever blue

Here's the chicks I was talking about above. These chicks hatched March 22 and 23 and this pic was taken this afternoon. I"m sure they are green splits.

Do you see yellow or white nodules?

I see white

just like mine... but I can't send photo's. The files are too big for this site.

Well, today was fun. This afternoon, a baby was tossed again. Warmed it, supplemented it, it pooped in my hand... waited for dad to leave the nest, he wouldn't, so I had to tap on the nest, to get him out, in order to put the baby back in..only to find 2 babies in there, so one of them was a late hatchling. Which got tossed? I couldn't tell ya.. Odd thing is... each time there has been food in the right sided crop of the baby tossed.... I only supplement until they stop opening their mouth, which is about 8 dips into the formula with the paint brush.. This food seems to go to the other side....that works for me...LOL BTW the other 2 babies had the same amount of food in their crops too.. but I didn't mess with them... just visually checked..and they started to beg.... so, I left the room, in hopes one parent would go feed them...and not toss again tonight..

Right before lights out, none were tossed.. Both parents were in the nest... I have to assume this is going to happen again tomorrow, so, I'll be up before dawn, just waiting to rescue a tossling.....LOL

I can't figure out what the problem is... Dad is NOT a first timer.. Mom is.... so, I really don't know who's tossing... but, when I do find the baby on the opposite end of the cage, under the grates, (each time) dad has been in the nest.... It's one of those plastic nests from ABBA with the double opening top. If the bird stretches it's neck, it can see out the opening, I can see them checking out whats' going on.

Candace, From the photo's I took of the last 3 babies from this pair... the skin color was yellow by day 2, but the nodules were still white.. by day 5 they were yellow.. If I have to hand raise one of these new babies, I will definately be able to take better notes..lets hope not...

I'm going to start paying closer attention from day 1 to day 5 of any of my splits or suspected splits. As you brought up the question is how to mark them at 54 days... I was thinking if it was a little older before they turned yellow you could wtite the band number down and follow them that way...maybe make a small band out of wir from day 4 until time to close band? Or possibly food coloring... get you doggie dye Miss groomer

PS I put those 2 handfeds back with the parents before the theater outing...got home around 10:00 and they were in the nest but not fed and cold as icebergs. The parents were just hanging out getting fat on the kids food

so the babies are back in the house with me and under my wing until I can figure out where to stick them.... may have to feed these out myself

Hope yours are done throwing the new baby out with the morning bath water every morning.

ok, yours are now 2 and 3 days old and still have the white nodules, and they still look pink skinned to me...

I can't really be absolute about the age mine were when the nodules changed cause in every photo I took after day 2, they didn't open their mouths... but the skin color was yellowing after day 2.. when the nodules were still white... by day 5 color was coming in on the wings @ 7 days, the wings were very dark... by 10 old days old I could tell the dilutes from the green

Also.. good news.... I found no babies tossed all day today... I started checking at 630 am every 1/2 hour.. then went to every hour.. then every 2 hours...just checked at 5pm... I have to assume they are being well cared for as both parents have been either in the nest or one has been out on each visual check of the cage floor and on my hardwood floors... just in case the tosser got better range on a throw....LOL

Gee's Candace.. I was just seeming to get the hang of feeding with a paint brush and you end up having to do it... I'm soooooo sorry I jinx'd ya...

That's GRRRRRREAT that they are not tossing today!! YAY!!

I got lucky with the parents of the above chicks - they are first timers!

No tossing and feeding very well. Janine - you have one fabulous Gouldian hen coming your way in 56:17:09:10

I don't think of you as a jinx

They are doing swell today...feeding around the clock but I may have a nest I can stick them into. I am having a population explosion again with gouldians. Also have set up some societies..... just in case some of my other newbies want to get wild and crazy.

I am glad your pair have settled down. Though I know you would be ga ga over a handfed pet gouldian boy that sings to you when you talk sweet to him

They do make a handsome couple.

And it's his first time too.

Gouldian life doesn't get much better than these two!
