Using bleach for preventative can be used as preventative maintenance for the health of the bird, but you'll want to follow it up with a porbiotic treatment to get new healthy bacteria into the birds digestive tract. We treat birds new to our flock that way while they are in quarantine. We also give them Amoxitex and check their droppings daily to see if they could use any other treatment before being released from our 6 week quarantine.

Hey Ken, can you post a pic of your fountain? I am interested in getting something like that as my birds love baths, they average about 3 each a day.
Geordie, I'm thinking of buying a mini fountain too, something like that:

I'm not sure though if stuff like that is safe
Those look nice, a lot better than the plastic bath they have now

I've added small amounts of bleach to my birds drinking water for years. I've had a watering system with about a gallon capacity for years and will add a couple of drops of bleach to it when I change the water. Chlorine in the water helps kill the bacteria but it will quickly evaporate. I don't use it all the time but maybe once a week. Once a month I'll use a little stronger mix and flush it through the lines to clean them out then follow that with a long flush of pure water. I just added a 5 gallon bucket for a water tank in my new aviary, I got a food grade Black bucket to keep the light out and help stop bacteria before it starts.
Not sure it's a perfect system but it works for me.
