First Star Finches

Post by annague » Mon Apr 04, 2011 2:25 pm

In order to expand my horizons as a Finch keeper/hobbyist; I wanted to breed 3 new species this year including Stars.

My first 2 clutches of Star babies have fledged. I have two each redfaced and yellowfaced (from different parents).

I don't like that my clutches have been so small... :?

I am also including some pictures of the second clutch which was of a red-faced male and a yellow-faced female.

The RF male was too flighty for me to get a picture.

Oh they're beautiful! The stars are very hard to find out here and very expensive but I'd sure love to have a pair some day.

My Stars are in separate 8 ft. flights (mixed). I've tried cage breeding this year (PF's so far) and haven't done so well... :? Do you think I would have more offspring if they cage bred?

Thank you, Deborah, for the compliment about my pictures. I try to take close-ups because, to me, birds are individuals and I want to know/see every detail -- also, it helps that they are used to me gawking at them through the bars quite a bit...

=D> Isn't that something... I love the first time I get a close up and personal glimpse of a bird I have never bred before :D
They look great and healthy.

I would love to see a picture of your aviaries... I don't think you have ever shown us them...just close ups. I want to see :D

I can hardly back up in the space that I have to get enough of a picture to see the whole aviary... :( I'll see what I can do. To me, it's not the aviary I particularly like-- it's the way it's 'furnished' for its inhabitants... BIG twisty limbs of trees that transect the entire length. Long vines hanging down everywhere...

It's a jungle!! :)

That is so wonderful!! Those babies are adorable. I have a pair of stars, but they have never bred for me. They are very bonded and always "kissing" (that is what it looks like they are doing). They are such sweet little birds. =D> =D> =D>

Congrats! :) Beautiful babies! Low numbers just means they are still getting things right ;) Mine are giving huge numbers and overdoing it in my opinion... (my Bluecaps)...
