juvenile moult... is this normal?

Post by colorin » Tue Apr 12, 2011 11:34 am

This is my yellow hen going through the moult, but I want to make sure that her "looks" are normal in a moulting gouldian of if I should worry. None of the other chicks are so "advanced" in their moult. She sure looks pitiful :-(

And also... I'd say she's a OH. what do you think? Would the tip of her beak be yellow is she was a RH?

Definitely an OH. =D> Half of my Goulds are at the same point of moulting and pretty much look like that at this time.

Thank you!!! What a relief!! :D
And about her being an OH... it's a bit weird.
I had 3 pairs of gouldians:
-The first pair being both RH have 4 chicks, 2 of them OH (so they both must be split for OH)
-The 2nd pair: diluted RH cock, hen BH: 6 chicks (this yellow hen being one of them) so it seems that both parents are ALSO split for OH
-The 3rd pair died last November after laying several eggs (DF yellow cock RH and a RH/WC hen). The last egg I gave it to a pair of societies resulting in this chick:

Now, unless I'm wrong this chick seems to be OH too !!!
Isn't it weird? Even if one cock ended up being the father of them all... the three hens must have been split for OH !!
(I breed them in an aviary, so it could be possible that all hens have been "unfaithful" and all choosing the same obviously-very-handsome-and-sexy-rogue! :-)

Would the beaks of (all) the parents have to be orange if they are split to orange?

He's cute too! =D>

None of my cocks have yellow beaks. Nor hens (they still have that charcoal colour they had when breeding)

Nope - the beak is only yellow if they are genetically yellow, it won't be yellow if they are just split :)

Beautiful birds!
Not trying to hijack, but does someone have a photo of their adult Gouldians going through a molt. I want to compare it to what mine look like in order to make sure they are molting and not something else.
