They are beautiful!!! =D> =D> =D>

Makes me want to have yet another species... (I had a couple of canaries as a kid. The male was a "Harzer Roller" and he had the most beautiful song ever.)
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

L in Ontario wrote:Thanks Robin - that's very informative and more than I had seen. I also read the other end of the spectrum where eggfood every day while incubating will cause the hen's body to have a lower temperature and thereby not incubating properly and the eggs won't develop at all.

That's what I presumed happened to my Gloster's clutches as I gave them as much eggfood as they could eat every day - they LOVED it; along with apples, cucumbers and romaine lettuce. But none of their eggs developed.

Then again - some sites say Canaries should get a high protein diet everyday of the year. How is anyone to know what is right and what the Canaries diet REALLY should be? #-o

Sorry Candace for taking time away from your gorgeous babies there! How many eggs have your canaries laid now for their second clutch? I just bought 6 fake canary eggs last night for when my canaries start on their second round.
Liz it is Misty ;)

Honestly I don't know how many eggs but I gave her back 4 eggs and she had one from that day so at least 5 - but haven't looked since.

I didn't give her any fake eggs but just took her eggs each day - didn't even think to give her some in place of the ones I took :?

There are a couple of reasons why eggfood is removed while the hen is incubating the eggs. While sitting, the hen is very inactive and eating eggfood during this time while cause some weight gain which is undesirable while breeding. Another reason is the high protein level of the eggfood. This can slightly increase the hens body temperature and can lead to unsuccessful incubation as the eggs may be kept at too high a temperature. The other side effect of the high protein is that it keeps the hen in a state of high condition which will make her slightly hyper causing her to spend too much time off the eggs. It can also make the bird want to breed again, which can lead to the eggs being abandoned.

We start giving eggfood again the day before the chicks are due to hatch.
I have read that Canaries body temps are much higher than other birds but didn't think the eggfood would cause it to go higher?

I coincidentally had stopped giving hard boiled eggfood several days ago because I didn't have the time to make it so was only giving the Orlux but still giving the greens. The babies are not weaned - noticed the father feeding them this morning so figured he needed something to feed them with instead of just seeds. She seems very calm and steady on the nest.

So are we saying as soon as the babies are weaned they need to be separated from the parents? And they can get eggfood daily?

I love your canaries. They are so beautiful! I love the opal mosaic (or is it the other way around?) feathering. I have a pair of red factors and yellows but your canaries take the cake. I hope you have wonderful success with the second clutch.

Yes, Daddy birds can be that way! :?

Colorin, in English it is Yellow Opal Mosaic -- I don't think the agate is in there but someone who is a canary guru can correct me.... :)

Sorry to hear that Misty. Did the babies go with dad or stay with mom? I'm guessing they went with dad so mom can incubate the next clutch.

Their correct color term is "Yellow Agate Opal Mosaic Canary"

They went by themselves to a cage and eating eggfood first thing this morning ;)

I left Dad behind because he was the turd anyway - trying to breed his daughter!

Mom is on EIGHT EGGS!!! they all look fertile but only 6 were for sure - it is harder to tell on their eggs because of the time difference and the color difference - especially with the speckles. Dad is going to need to help her raise this new family!
