My New Owls

Post by Sally » Sat Apr 16, 2011 10:55 pm

I just picked these up at the airport this morning, and they are settling in. Hard to get a photo with all 8 of them facing forward, in focus, etc. There are 3 hens and 5 males, all NFSS closed-banded, 2010 and early 2011, 6 bloodlines.

These came from a forum member, kcdozy, who posted them in the Marketing forum. They look great, and Rich is so good to work with. I can highly recommend him.

I always have drama at my house, and today was no exception. I took the carrier into my small bathroom to remove the birds. Instead of putting the carrier on the floor, covering it with a sheet or beach towel, and removing them one by one, I decided to let them loose and catch them up one by one. This was so easy, I was patting myself on the back for a job well done, when I got down to the last bird--not to be found! I looked everywhere (which doesn't take long in my tiny bathroom). Impossible, this bird cannot have disappeared.

I finally climbed on the toilet seat, then onto the countertop, to look on the top of the cabinets. To my dismay, I realized that I hadn't even thought of the opening up there. When these cabinets were installed, there was a 3" gap between the linen tower and the wall. A piece of trim was installed to cover the gap, but at the top, there it was--a 3" x 12" opening. I got my flashlight, and sure enough, there was a little Owl at the bottom. There was no way this little one was going to be able to fly vertically 7' straight up to the top.

So off to Home Depot to buy a pry bar, back home to pop off the piece of trim, a net to shoo him out of there, and out he hopped, none the worse for wear. Back with his cagemates, he had a big story to tell. I made note of his band number, as I certainly will remember Trouble! (Third from the right)

Trouble is, indeed, well-named. And, seems to be the nature of many owl finches...

I'm glad you were able to retrieve him none the worse for wear! What a beautiful lot of owls and nice new bloodlines for you.

I hope you get a lot of success with these guys! =D> =D>

So very cute! I love the way owls look (someday, I will have some)! I actually gasped out loud when I was reading that, so afraid that the outcome was not going to be good... Very happy to hear that Trouble is okay! :D

I am happy to get new bloodlines, as I have the feeling that many of us in this area trace our birds back to Mr. Davis in Oklahoma, who was THE big Owl breeder at the FW mart each year. He always sold out by noon, and then you had to wait 6 months till he came to the next mart. And I am thrilled to find someone who NFSS closed-bands his birds! I think most people on here know what an advocate of closed banding I am!

Sally, Thank you for the kind comments and sure am glad you found trouble. I am going to have to design a door for those carriers so its not so hard to get them out. I really enjoyed talking to you, its such a pleasure to deal with such nice customers like you. We look forward to future updates on the owls and trouble and hope all goes well with them.
Thanks again

They just look darling in that picture. And Trouble was aptly name for sure. Glad you were able to find the little one.

Rich, I think the carrier is just ingenious. Many of us aren't handy enough to make wood carriers, and this pet carrier can be set up for shipping by anyone. I think I will take some pictures later today and start a thread in Resources, if it is OK with you, to show others how they could make a carrier for shipping. For those who have never shipped, it is quite scary, and the first hurdle is figuring out how in the world to make or get a shipping box.

BTW, they are all doing great this morning.
