quarantine advice for several pairs of different finches?

Post by lstyles » Sun Apr 17, 2011 11:46 pm

Ok, today I went a little hog wild and bought ten new finches at the bird fair! I got three gouldians to breed with the ones I already have (two males and one female), two owls (male and female unrelated), two BCCBs (male and female unrelated), three society finches (supposed to be females but who knows). I plan to quarantine them two floors below my other birds for about 4-6 weeks. My pre-existing birds are all molting. Because I plan to breed the two new male gouldians to existing birds I don't want to leave them in the quarantine cage with the new female in case they decide they would like her instead. I will put the two male gouldians in a separate smaller quarantine cage where they can't see the female. Does this sound like a good plan? My question is should I be doing something similar with my BCCBs and owl finches? I plan to breed these birds to each other but it seems like I shouldn't want them breeding while they are in quarantine. If I remove all nests will I be okay until the quarantine process is over. The societies are for potential use for fostering when I breed my gouldians later in the summer. I have one other existing society so am planning on at least 2 pairs of what should be females. Obviously there might be a male in there so there is some risk of them breeding while in quarantine. Is this okay? What would you do with this mix of birds?
thanks,
Lori

I would just remove the nests as you indicated and leave them together if the cage is big enough. As you want to breed them after quarantine anyway - this can be their time to bond.

And... Congratulations on all the new birds!! =D>
