Hen is sick again??

Post by G8love4finches » Tue Apr 19, 2011 5:33 pm

You might remember this hen....She was loosing feathers around her beak and had a sore foot....This was her picture November 2010:

Image

She fully recovered from that time, I treated her with Iverlux and Pestex for mites....Her leg still isn't normal and she sits on the bottom of the cage alot.....And this is her today....

Image

Again she has lost feathers around her beak but now she is squinting her eyes....I put a heat lamp on the cage, and I've sprayed her with Pestex and have started treating her with Iverlux again....I replaced the perches in the cage....I treated my whole flock with Iverlux preventatively (a 3 week treatment) only 9 days ago....She sits and slightly flutters her wings and hops around on the paper towel...She is in a cage with 2 other females and they show no signs of anything??...They have finished breeding and are starting their molt....I am concerned about this little one....I thought I had this beat....Any help would be appreciated..

I wish I could help but I can't. Poor little hen :( I'm sure some of the experienced Gould breeders will jump in and give you some advice. [-o< she gets better soon! [-o<

I forgot to add today is the last day of a 7 day treatment of Ronex for all my birds....I was treating all my birds because they never had been treated, and I was treating all my fledglings....When I started the Ronex, I thought if this little one had something going on it might take care of it....Obviously not...

I put liquid glucose in the water for extra energy...but then I have a brother with a candy factory. You might get some from a drug store...glucose is in most of the fancy bird pick me ups....mine is cheaper.

Good luck.

I had a hen with similar problems (facial feather loss which eventuall turned into an abscess type, rubbing of eyes and symptoms that looked like the one eye cold) and after trying just about every medical solution out there eventually did what I should have at the onset. I went to my vet. He did some smears and fecals and found there was a bacterial infection. Gave me an antibiotic and I've had no repeat of the issue at all.

I put some Thrive in with her soaked seed today to give her extra vitamins, minerals and electrolytes....She seemed to have her eyes open a bit more this morning, is still fluffed up and sleeping
