LONG cages!

Seriously considering buying another cage and doing this, I'd love to see them flying and hopping about with more space

you can create one cage from two cages when in a pinch. Simply remove the sides of both and connect them with zip ties. I have done this with the regular 30 x 18 cages and the 30 x 36 inch high cages.

I have two bourkes on top and shaftails on the bottom, both flights are made from two cages each.

!!!!!! holy whiskered carps, that's genius! i never would've thought of that... i can see by looking at my cage the sides and top would come off pretty easily! piece of cake!!

i was considering making my own cage, but i don't really have the time, resources, or skill. but i DO have a tool kit with several pairs of sturdy pliers in it (thanks Dad!), and i think i'm handy enough to bend wires with 'em

I too have put a pair of flights end to end to make a big cage. just use some cable ties from the hardware store to hold them together. And I've been thinking of setting them in a foursquare arrangement myself, but I'm not sure I've got the space, at least not in the front room. i plan on leaving one of the side panels of one of the rear cages in place to help give the cage more stability. the birds will still have the front cages to fly the whole length through. this also gives a wall to attach perches, and greens for a visual barrier. the main problem I see is how to clean the pans in the back two cages?!?

I was think about connecting two cages one behind the other...remove the back of one and the front of the other. In order to clean the pans and remove them easily I though of adhering a strap on the tray in the rear of the cage that is long enough to extend under the front tray. Simply remove the front tray, pull the strap towards you to remove the second (rear tray).

good idea Cindy! I was trying to think of ways to attach the two trays to each other, but I think your idea would be much easier to execute.

hmmm, next problem: what to use as a stand for the cages; three feet deep is pretty big....
maybe here's where I'll need some craftsman skills, and try to make some shelves or cabinets to hold the super-cage. hmmmm...

I use an an old kitchen table for a stand. Got it at a thrift store. It puts the birds up nice and high, and I just crawl underneath to clean the far side. I have it angled in a corner so it is not right up against the wall except on each back end. I do actually have to move the table out to pull out the rear trays, but it's not so bad. I call it my generic setup.

Heres my set up....what I did was to put 1 flight cage on top of another & secured it with zip ties.....took alittle time & patience but it was worth it because the birds just loved the extra flight room. I use a cheap utility cart with a thin sheet of plywood on it for a stand.

Joining 2 cages together is a quick and inexpensive way to create grow out flights. I had Hubby buile some low stands so that I could stack more cages in the same space
I put them on the wired and screened balcony in summer and then indoors for the winter.

Joining 2 halves of 30"x18"x18", I also join the 36" tall and the 55" tall to make even larger flights

I've done the same as Candace (now I just need a bird room to expand into!)

And if you are really creative you can take the sides and fronts you removed from the other cages and create new cages from those...rays can be ordered from a few different companies...I think either Bird Supply NH or ABBA Seed sell the trays...I'll check and get back on that one!

Candace...in you store will you be carrying replacement parts like trays and such....the trays can break if dropped the wrong way.

Yes Cindy, I will carry spare parts. It is so expensive to ship them though because of the ackward size...mail charges for oversized I always order extra trays because when cleaning cages I simply slide the dirty one out and slide a clean one in. I then can take the dirties outdoors and bleach and pressure wash them (I have hit the trays the wrong way with the pressure washer and sent them rolling/sailing down the driveway...talk about broken trays )

I have a friend who has a welder buddy and he made a frame to connect the 2 halves together.... looks really professional and strong. I just connect mine with a zip tie.

when i built my cages,you could split them up into seperate 2ft cages for breeding purposes.....but in the winter i would take all the sliders out (cage dividers) and the birds had a 6 ft long length of cages to fly in...thats how they got fit for the summer .i took all the middle perches out and left the end lower and upper ones in and they would fly from end to end,i think most people build thier cages the same in this country .

Candace, my husband ravels up your way from time to time on business, if I need extra trays once you are up and running with the store I can order them and have him stop by. Saves on shipping!!!

The one issue I have is the bottom where it fits together leaves a gap that the trays do not fit under, so debris drops through. My husband has someone at work that made me some wonderful metal trays, bet he could weld a piece to cover that area...great thought Candace. The birds do love the extra fight room!!!!

I got in touch with my pet store guy who also breeds birds. He built my cage for me. Mine is 9 feet long, 2 feet tall and 3 /12 feet wide. He even built in trays at the bottom for easy cleaning. We also put in a dividing wall with a large door. So when I want I can open that door and the birds have the full 9 feet, or I can shut it and separate some and get one cage that is 2 feet long and the other cage that is 7 feet long.
