Coccidiosis?

Post by Ameza » Wed Apr 20, 2011 7:07 pm

All right. Lost a bird few weeks ago, no apparent reason.

Now I have noticed red/bloody looking poop in at least one bird (he is in a hospital cage now). Been looking fluffy as well.

So, from what I have read is that Coccidiosis often shows with bloody stools.

So my question is, do you know of anything else that it might be or should I bet on Coccidiosis?

...hopefully I can get in touch with someone tomorrow about this

Are your birds kept out doors? What are the aviary conditions (humidity, temp, etc.) like presently?

Cocci is most often found in outdoor aviaries where the conditions are warm and humid and the birds have open/easy access to contaminated food and or water, or soiled aviary floors.

If your birds are indoors and your cages are kept clean, I would be skeptical about it being Cocci.

What are the other symptoms (if any?)?

Have you recently brought in new birds?

Can you have someone do a fecal smear for you? If it's coccidiosis that should show. I hope its Not....

All the best!!

Thank you all guys.

My birds are in indoor cages.
I have recently gotten two new birds but they have not joined my other birds. Also from a breeder I have gotten birds before from and never had any problems so far.

I made some serious cleaning just now and bough a natural medicene that is supposed to kill all unwanted bacteria and fungus and balance their stomach.

Hopefully that will help!

We just lost a male society finch we had for a year today for unknown reasons. The avian vet could not determine the reason either. She ruled out bleeding, weight loss, breathing, and disease, but could not rule out coccidosis without a culture. Since he already was dead, I did not want to pay for labs, but will watch the cage he was housed and see anyone else has any fluffing or odd stool. His weight was good, but he had been fluffed up for the las few days. Then, today I found him at the bottom of the cage leaning against a food dish! He was so pitiful and sad looking.
Any thoughts? :? :(

Cindy
Thanks. After reading those links, I think our Society male died from the stress of being chased and picked on by our owl finch last week before we moved him to another cage and found him a mate. After he was moved, the Society was fluffed up and stayed by himself, but appeared to eat and slept with the other finches. But, two days later, today, he was on the bottom of the cage and leaning on the food dish. He died at the vets, while on oxygen and fluids. So, maybe his system was too stressed from being chased last week and then he couldn't absorb his food and then just tuckered out. IDK? The vet could not find signs of weight loss, swelling, blood or feather loss or anything else to give her a hint as to what caused his death.
