Something wrong with his leg?

Post by Ameza » Fri Apr 29, 2011 1:33 pm

Hiya guys.

I have a wonderful clutch of 6 chicks, all of them have properly fledged, expect one. And that was a few days ago. He just stays in the nest, though I have seen him try out a little. I picked him up and put him on the cage floor to see what he would do, and he tried to fly up but only got a little way into the air before falling down again. He also walks really strangely around the floor, almost like crawling, using his wings for support.

So I think it's his leg though I can not see any injuries, but his reflexes and grip are not as strong on that leg.

So I wonder, has anyone had a similar experience, and any ideas what I could do, or just wait and see if he gets better.

Thanks

Poor little sweetie pie :( I wish I had answers for you. I hope he gets stronger! Maybe he's just a late bloomer. I hope that's all it is. [-o<

Yeah, I was thinking that at first but I have never seen fledged or unfledged chicks act like this. But I do hope he'll get better in a few days time. It breaks my heart to see him like this.

Awww... Poor little tyke :(

Clearly he wants to get at least a little higher up. What if you put one of those small bird ladders at the bottom, angled up so he can climb his way upwards. At least get a little higher and maybe not feel so vulnerable.
It may help him to exercise his muscles a bit too.

When I had a little Strawberry fledgling that was clearly very young to have left the nest, I put a very low perch in for him...He gained strength by perching and flapping his wings....I think it was almost a week before he got any higher than the lowest perch....Also make sure there are food and water dishes low enough for him to reach....I think he will get stronger and join the rest soon....Keep us posted
