new flight cage almost done!

Post by 6finchfriends » Thu May 05, 2011 1:37 am

Hi everyone! Thought I'd post a photo of my new flight cage now that it's nearly finished. All it needs are perches and my society family! I think they'll love it! We put a shop light on top of the cage just for the photo. When we move it in the basement bird room we'll hang it over the cage.

If anyone has any questions on construction I'd be happy to answer them. I did take photographs of the building process and have written plans if anyone wants to build one. The total cost was about $100.00 to build. I thought that was pretty inexpensive.

Thanks everyone! For those of you that have cages with plexi-glass do you think I need to put sticky's or something so they don't think it's open? I'm a little worried they'll try to fly through it.

Thanks again~ I just put the perches in that I had drying for the last 2 weeks and adjusted them so the babies can get to the floor and still fly up to the top. I think since they have all fledged and can fly I can move them into the new cage? I'm not putting the nest back in but I am making them a fleece covered platform so they can still cuddle up (being societies) but open so it shouldn't encourage nesting. Just something they can 'stack up' on at night :D

I remember reading a while back that someone suggested drawing vertical lines on glass/plexi to make a visual barrier. Then gradually remove lines (maybe every 2nd or 3rd line) until they are all gone. I guess this would help them adjust to the plexi. I think wet erase marker would work well, or a sharpie which you could wipe off with rubbing alcohol.

We moved it into the bird room in the basement tonight! I put the perches in and hung up the little sleeping ledge for them. I really like the peg-board backing. It's so easy to change perches around! I'm very excited to get them moved in!
