Blackbelly Fire Finch Babies have RED pearls!

Post by annague » Thu May 05, 2011 5:47 pm

Well my Blackbellied Fire Finches that I showed in a previous post lost their nest on the branch. Strangely enough, the male started building another nest in the SAME place. (I have since gotten in the aviary cage and 'pinned' some vine branches strategically under their nest to support it). And, they are sitting on eggs again (very faithfully).

Out of the first nest dropped 4 eggs, 2 broke but 2 did not. I took those 2 and my Soc's incubated them. 2 babies hatched but one did not do well and died after the first day.

The second is doing well so far -- the Soc's are not feeding him really good but they are feeding him some so I am supplementing him.

Anyway, the reason for this post is to show everyone the neon red pearls that Blackbelly Fire Finches have (and maybe others too?? -- I just haven't had any babies from my red-billed FF's yet so I don't know for sure.)

Here are pictures of the little guy below. :) He looks a little scary so close up.

(BTW: He has kind of a dirty mug from me feeding him -- I took the pictures before I wiped him off. )

My brain... I'm sorry Anna, I did see the photos. I remember you said you pretended not to see the hen since she thought she was hiding. I thought that was so sweet. Is that the nest that fell?

Yes! I am going to take a picture of their new nest when I get a chance but they are very private little birds so I am giving them another few days before I try.

It's ok... I can't remember stuff a lot, either!

Oh, something I wanted to add: I saved this little hen from a lady who did not want her because she has no foot -- you can see in the first picture, so I took her. She has been the best little hen -- just sweet as can be, gets along with all the birds and sits on her eggs so consistently calm. I was so disappointed for her and the little male (also a rescue but just because he was not wanted anymore) because their eggs were so close to hatching (3 days) when the nest fell.

Just goes to show you; you never know where or when or in what condition you can help save a bird but what a blessing these 2 have been!

Best not to disturb them - let them sit. That's more important than pics. [-o< [-o<

Anna, that is amazing! That first photo of the fledgling is as good as any I have seen on mouth marking sites. =D> And the second photo makes me think of E.T.

Wow - super photos! And I think that is one cute baby, even though it reminds me of those Chines Crested "Ugly" dogs (who are also adorable!). Love the red nodes. Fingers crossed that the wee one thrives for you!

That's a heart warming story! Two unwanted fire finches that ended up being rescued from a life of woe, falling in love and raising a family. You've got a soap opera going there... or a best seller  It's wonderful of you to rescue them! We have two rescued parrots. I keep checking Craigs List for finches in our area but so far no luck. Anyway, Your FF are beautiful! Can't wait to see updated photos of the little one you saved. How are the Societies doing with it now?

The first thought that came to my mind was Chinese Crested :D
Best of luck with him Anna, and hope the next nest stays together

I think your baby is cuter than this Anna... although for an ugly dog, it is kinda cute
