What is it that makes folks want bigger??? I keep asking myself that question since I purchased this new aviary. It arrived last night at 5:00pm after waiting all day for it. It measures 35x35x72 with 1/2 in spacing and I am hoping it is large enough for my finches. it stated it was for small birds like finches and canaries. Yeh! Right... The perches in this cage are big enough for me to perch on.

After it was out of the box I found parts were bent one of the welds was broken Yikes!
Well I got it together with the exception of the roof which there weren't enough bolts for

It doesn't look bad and I can deal with the few bent pieces and the broken weld I just hope its large enough for my babies. I have 6 finches 2 owls, 2 Zebras and 2 Orange Cheeked Waxbills. The two little waxbills are the ones that concern me as I have heard that they will try and get out. I have lots of ideas on how to decorate it like placing reed bamboo around the three back panels. Lots of greenery vines. Oh! the other problem is that there is only one large door with a small door inside it. So I am hoping I can get some input from all you long term finch fanciers.
What do you think????
Will post a photo in next post.

Yes a picture would tell 1,000 words for sure. The biggest issue would be the waxbills and the bar spacing of 1/2". I think that may be too large for them. And I presume the 72" is height...? Lengthwise would be even better but 35" is nice too.

My gold breast waxbills are in a flight that has 1/2 inch bar spacing, and I have never had one escape. I think goldbreasts may even be a little tinier than orange cheeks. I used to have orange cheeks and had them in a flight with the 1/2 inch bar spacing and none of them ever escaped either.

I have Orange Cheeked Waxbills in a flight with 1/2" spacing and never have had them even stick their heads through the bars....My friend has Gold Breasted Waxbills and she has one that is continually getting out of the 1/2" bars....They say that Orange Cheeks are escape artists but mine have never been an issue....As far as the cage is concerned, I always look for a cage with as many small doors as I can....This allows you to work and access the cage without the birds having a large escape door open inviting them out!....They are very fast and can fly by you in a second....Just my 2 cents worth...

Thanks everyone for your comments I will give the Orange Cheeks a try once I get the roof on. I spent the afternoon out shopping for goodies for the cage. Boy! was that fun. I had to get longer bolts for the roof so I will be working on that tonight. Once I move my babies over to the new cage I will post again.
Thanks Again!!

I know that the new cage has a very big door with a smaller one in it but I plan on hanging on the inside of the door a piece of clear plastic from a table cover I used. This way the plastic will cover my hands and the door when I open it. I am also trying to find a link to a place that sold parts for cages like side panels, doors etc. I can't remember where I found it.
If anyone knows of that link or one like it please let me know....

I think it looks nice! Just take out the big perch, try to get natural branches for them with various thickness. That's much better for their feet. And I'm sure they'll like the vines to hide in.

Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I think it looks very nice and It's big too. Right now I have my Societies in a cage that is taller than it's long and they seem to really like flying up and down even though the internet said they don't like to fly up. I have a small rope across the top part of the cage and they fly up, touch their feet on the rope and dive over the other side back down. They do it over and over so they must have fun flying up. Can't wait to see it all decorated!! With birdies in it!

I think it always depends on how comfortable the birds are, and it depends on the birds as well. Some of my birds love to walk around on the floor, some never do... So there's no telling.

Still trying to get the roof on this cage. Had to go and buy bigger bolts now I need washers

. I would like to get this thing finished by the weekend. I have added a clear plastic curtain inside of the big door so when I open it it covers the opening. That will have to work for the time being.

That's very annoying that they didn't send you the right hardware for the cage! Have you called and asked them for at least a discount refund for the missing parts?
