Cage flooring

Post by tobyneilson » Fri May 06, 2011 1:31 pm

Hi,just a quick question, is sawdust ok to use for flooring in a flight and breeding cages?
The sawdust I want to use is quality sawdust meant for animals,ie hamster/rabbit/guinea pigs etc
I currently use sand but was wondering about sawdust, mainly because I can get 25kg of sawdust for £7 compared to 15kg of sand for £10,so be a cheaper option in the long run

Never used it but I would think it would become a real mess if it got wet. :(

strangely I thought the opposite , I thought it might soak things up better than sand,

just to clarify, it not really fine dust style sawdust, it is more coarse and bigger than sand(if that makes sense) not the dust you get when sawing a plank or alt

If it's more like "wood chips" then it would be better then sawdust. :) I use wood chips for my hedgehog and they get rather wet and soggy when the water spills. As long as they are changed often so you don't have to worry about mold I guess it could work.

yea it is more like wood chips, I change it every week and at mo prob go through 20kg a month of sand, so a big bag of sawdust would save me around £30-£50 a year,
thanks for reply, will try it this weekend and watch them jest yo male sure

Do you mean wood shavings like those? http://www.petco.com/product/107259/PET ... dding.aspx
If that's what you mean, they are great. I use it as floor bedding in my walk in aviary. It absorbs well and smells good. (It least when it's fresh. ) I use aspen because it's considered safe for pets. Pine can cause respiratory problems because of the sap that it can still contain.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.
