blackbirds

Post by kenny » Mon May 09, 2011 9:17 am

hi everyone
i have a small leylandii bush just outside my front porch door, really its been left there because my porch door opens outwards, and when the wind blows this little bush stops the door handle from going through my living room window......well my son came back froma trip yesterday with his girlfriend and she just happened to brush up against the bush as she opened the door and she heard a lot of loud cheeping she shouted of me and i went to look and there were 4 what i think are blackbird chicks with thier beaks wide open,so i just had to get my camera out and take some pics they are a bit hard to see as the bush is very dense and my lens would not go all the way in without disturbing the nest to much anyway see what you think.by the way the swifts are back like clockwork 2nd week in may right on time

Ken - you're so lucky :)

Used to have a big pond by our back yard, and in spring I'd find whatever nests I could and keep my eye on them. Blackbirds are so comical and clever - watching the babies learning to fly is a treat!

Hi Kenny - Bicheno, or Owl Finches as they are called here in the States is derived from their species name which is Taeniopygia bichenovii. The bichenovii is drived from James Ebenezer Bicheno, who was a English botanist. So to answer your question, "Bicheno" is a derivative of the surname of a English gentleman.

Cute little ones... Kenny you don't need an aviary. The birds come to you instead!

Well the owls/bicheno are also called double bars in Australia. Obvious why. As far as I know the name owl originates from USA keepers.

Common Blackbirds realy do have one of the most beautiful songs. I was listening to two of them the other day just singing to each other for like half an hour at diffrent ends of the street.

Oh how awesome Kenny! We have red winged black birds that nest in the cattails around a pond on our neighbors property. I have always wondered what the babies looked like so I'm glad you posted your great photos! They might not be the same as our black birds but they must be close. I just love the black birds song. What a treat!
