Thanks everybody -- :) The little Blackbellies are really fun if you haven't thought about owning them before... they are kind of secretive but they have a very pretty single note call and are super bright in their spring plumage. They are also very peaceful little birds and like to spend a lot of time on the bottom of the cage -- which I think adds some interest to a larger aviary type cage.

The male has a beautiful little courtship dance (always performed on the floor of the cage which may explain why it's important for them to have "ground" as opposed to a grate) he spreads his beautiful tail like a fan and hops around her with a piece of grass in his beak.

The Soc's are very puzzling with this little baby Blackbellied FF. They forget to feed him if he is under them with their other eggs -- if I put him in front of them and he begs they will both feed him pretty good. :? Of course he can't stay there where it is too cold so I am trying to figure out why they won't feed him unless I put him in front of them.

That is strange why the Socs only feed when it is in front of them. I'm very glad you were able to observe that and help out when / as necessary!

I'm a little puzzled with the Soc's right now... they are really making my head hurt! :-k

I keep thinking if I could figure out why they will only feed him if I present him to them in front I could maybe get them to feed him all the time. But I let them babysit him today for a few hours after they fed him (put him under them of course so he would be warm) and I came back to a hungry and weak baby. :?

Psychologically I can't figure out why they will only feed him if they SEE him and he's begging. Yet they've done it over and over again. I take him out, warm and feed him and give him to them for the next feeding and they fill him up then ignore him once I place him on top of their eggs where they are sitting. Argghhh!!

Just 4 eggs I'm hoping they might hatch.... shall I move the eggs to other Societies? Do you think they aren't feeding because they're waiting on the eggs to hatch and he is just one baby??

I do - especially since it has been days... if mine have eggs I find they tend to wait to really feed until all the eggs hatch but then some will not feed only one baby. Mine will but not all of them will.

Misty, I'm sending you a big hug through the internet!

I removed the eggs and BINGO! the little FF baby is being fed so much it can hardly move.

Things are going well now with the Soc's and the FF baby although I am keeping an eye on things --

Whew! You got that right! He continues to do very well. In a day or so I will take another picture.

Pretty soon he should have some little brothers and sisters (or a sibling or two at least) -- his parents are still sitting on their eggs. :)

Here are new pictures of my fostered Blackbelly FireFinch baby -- he seems to be growing into his bling! I also have a picture of him between Pecan and Praline -- his doting foster parents (you can just see the dark curve of his head).

To show size I put him in a Tablespoon I use to move my babies around -- sort of like the 'spoon of destiny' someone else (forget who) on this site has described! :)
