OK I am just after some advice on if I have diagnosied this correctley,as I have never dealt with it personaly.
It started on one of my canaries, then noticed it on a zeb yesterday, both in different cages, at first with the canary I thought it was feather plucking so seperated her for a while, the base of his head and neck started to go fully bold, with some scabbing on it, when it started on the zeb a couple days later that is when I started thinking it was mites, the zeb has not lost as many feathers but they are both on the base head and neck.
The canary also spends a lot of time huddled up and sleeping
I have treated it with a spray I got from a pet shop at bottom of road, the owner breeds birds himself so stocks all bird treatment stuff but he is off for a week so I could not ask his opinion and the woman who is looking after shop is a miserable unchatty person
Have I got it right or is there something else it is,and if that is the case what treatment should I give?
Just to add both birds I have noticed it in are seperated
Feather mites, have i diaognised it correctly?

this article might help

Are you able to see small areas of dark spots...if so it could be lice. You don't think they are getting plucked by cage mates?

Thanks i will have a look, could not see any black spots, just some red scabby areas
At first I thought it could be plucking when it was just the canary, but when I noticed it on the zeb in same area that was when I thought mites, they are in seperate cages, but the canarys do have flight time outside cage so it could have passed that way??

Just as a update, just done my teatime check and the canary has passed away
the zeb is still hoping around,no sign of tiredness etc just feather loss, not as bad as the canary
Just hope I not got something serious as they were in same room as 6 fledgings,15 being sat on

Terribly sorry about your loss of your canary. Are both sores on the birds the same...can you get a picture of the spot on the zebra?
