Boiled egg question..?

Post by Oshtay » Tue May 17, 2011 2:44 pm

I have a pair of zebras feeding a new chick. I'm currently crushing a hard boiled egg, shell and all, and mixing a tiny bit of handfeeding formula to dry it out a bit. they really enjoy this, I'm just not sure how long the egg can sit out before going bad...?
16 zebras, 4 OC Waxbills, 2 owl, 3 society, 1 male Bccb, 2 red faced parrot finches, 2 seagreen parrot finches, 2 parrotlets, 6 chickens, 4 dogs, and 1 cat.

I put egg in the aviary in the morning and take it out at night. But I've read of others who only leave it in there for a couple hours. (Can't do that, I'm at work all day.)

I guess it also depends on the temperature, if the aviary/cage is indoors or outdoors. Mine is indoors and even in summer usually not much warmer than the house...

If they are feeding make sure they don't run out of it though... If you have the chance change/refill multiple times a day, if not... well, then you need to put enough in so they can feed the chick from sunrise to sunset...
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

It's about 72 degrees F. in my finch room and I leave the egg food in about 4-5 hours. I probably could leave it in longer but I just replaced it with fresh when they had chicks.

I feel much better now. I've been giving fresh in the morning, mid day, and before bed...between 10 and 11. I must admit....since the little chick came, I've left work early just to get home and make sure everything is ok

I give my birds eggfood every morning and leave it in all day and night. I take it out the next morning clean all the dishes and then give them new eggfood. I work nights (10pm-7am) so I don't like to take the eggfood out at night because they are well asleep when I wake up for food. I feel the birds know when the food is not good to eat anymore as they will just leave it alone after the afternoon is over.

I give egg food in the morning and don't take out till the next morning (if any is left which is rare). I put it on a plate thinly so it drys out before it goes bad. Been doing it this way for many years without a problem. :)
