5 New Finches Today

Post by ranchnanny » Thu May 26, 2011 7:26 pm

Yesterday I was at the Bend Petco and they had 4 Spice Finches and 1 Male Zebra Finch for $17.99 each with 50% off. They are closing out the small birds and just carrying the big parrots etc.

It broke my heart to see them in there knowing they might be there for a long time. My friend Judy told me I was being to practical and trying to rationalize why I couldn't by them "I don't have the room" "I'll need another cage" "What will my kids say" so home I went empty handed. #-o

This morning I called Judy and said lets go to town and I came home with all 5 finches. I didn't have the heart to leave the Zebra male all alone. He had been picked on by his Zebra mates he looks a little beat up but I will take care of that. I don't know what I have sex wise but that's ok. Two months ago I started out with one Male Red Factor now I have 19 birds in all. 2 Canaries with 4 chicks and 13 Finches #-o The 4th spice finch would not get in the photo.....

Somebody Help Me PLEASE

You're on the wrong forum if you think anyone here will tell or help you to NOT buy finches.

Seriously - congrats on all the newbies you got. They are beauties! =D>

Sherry, that was a sweet thing you did for these little ones. :D I bet the little male zebra will be stunning in no time! The Spice girls are very nice....All of us start out with one or two finches but...18 cages later.....house fulls later....we still open our hearts (and wallets!!!) to more of these little feathered fids!!!!

My wife comments to me that we started with what we thought were 2 male zebras...NOT they were M+F.
I am now at 9 primary cages for my finches, my wifes canary, 2 societies in extended quarantine and ran out of space so I had to put 2 zebras in the hospital cage.

Warning, zebras can be "problematic," and my hens are the worse. If I have more than 2 hens in a cage, they get aggressive, sometimes very aggressive. Figuring out a compatible combination has frustrated me. So now I have 5 pairs of hens in 5 cages. :(

I'm so happy you got them! Those Spice Girls are beautiful! I guess we are better enablers than we thought!! I wouldn't have been able to leave the zebra either. I'm a sucker for the underdog!! :?

Aww, you sound just like my mother, we had a similar situation with our society finches, CityBird, Iggy and Ryuuzaki =D>
the_3_stooges__socities.jpg
and then we bought a Female Zebra finch and she was mean as nails, I remember we were having an issue with aggression with her and we believed she hated them o-o'.
queen_bird.jpg
In the end she passed on of Egg binding (bless her little zebra finch soul), and We now believe that it's possible that she was a product of too much in breeding because she was aggressive with every finch she came along, and talked a Great deal =). what was funny if she was ticked off with you she'd let you know.
So Many Finches! Societies, Gouldians, Zebra's, Owl's, Java's, and a Lavender!
