owl finch question

Post by colorin » Sun May 29, 2011 5:34 am

I have two owl finches that are supposed to be males, but I've seen one of them doing the dance while holding a piece of grass in its beak... does that mean that the other is a female??
I've never seen my gouldians "dancing" unless there was a hen nearby..
I've read a lot about males having a wider black line and things like that, but I can't see no differences between these two :-(

Here they are:

Wish I could help you sex your owls

I can't believe that your male gouldians don't sing and dance every morning :? with or without a females presence :?

I was thinking the same thing, every day my gouldians are singing and dancing for anybody that will listen. :)
With the owls I go by if they sing or lay eggs :) takes longer to figure out but it's the only way I know for sure.

I am not 100% but the head on the one on the right looks a bit narrow, it may be a female. Owls are a bit tricky to sex. My males will dance with grass if courting but sometimes don't and just call and mate.

Do you have aphoto of both faceing forward to compare? Liz is really good at telling the sexes....oh Liz!!!!

my gouldians do sing, all day long, morning and afternoon, but I have only seen them doing the dance when females are around.
I will try to take more pictures of these two owls

Also, if I were to place a nest in the aviary I guess I would soon know if they are a pair. But I don't know if they would become aggressive towards the other species (bluecap and gouldian cocks)
what do you think?

Owls are pretty passive, I have had the females chase other females away but it was only with new females...ones that started off in the flight with her was ok.

Well, my spice finch boys seem happy enough with each other. :D

At least they are only doing the happy dance and not raping each other like my button quail males do once in a while. They are a happy trio of bachelors/widowers, but I can see them sometimes trying to mate with each other.... (And the one being raped usually tries to run away and does NOT like it. 8) )
