hi anna
thanks i felt i just had to explain about it,i have actually contacted a cancer website to see if they can shed any light on it,when you get your birds make sure you take plenty of pics so we can all have agood look and advice is free! by the way these coloured crested canaries, are they expensive i know they are unique to the states..we call the frosted pinks Isabel in this country.i just though with them being fairly new to the bird world are they a reasonable price...are there plenty of breeders about so you can get the right colours

Re: mixed small aviary?
Kenny, maybe it has to do with just regular things like: bacteria from their feces, etc.?
I haven't found a lot of Stafford breeders nearby where I live but the lady I am looking to buy from is pretty reputable and shows, etc. so she has a pretty good variety. I'll definitely take pictures and be looking for input on them I'm sure as I will be trying to breed canaries for the first time.

hi anna
you are probably right, but we have mcmillan nurses here who solely deal with every type of cancer, with it being a holiday here i dont suppose i will get a response for a while but i have e-mailed thier site just to see if they can give me an accurate answer....there was no doubt in the specialist mind that i would ever be able to keep them again.but i would like to know exactly what it is that affects my immunity....anyway i am quite content to help you guys with your problems..it helps fill my day

Re: mixed small aviary?
The "summer" addition to the indoor aviary is nearly finished. They will have access to this outdoor flight through the window. They can go in and out as they please and get as much sun as they want!
With my husband cooking, I've had the whole weekend to work on it and I hope I'll have it finished tonight

Re: mixed small aviary?
hahahaha
kenny, at home I'm the one doing the DIY things, if I had to rely on my husband to build a cage I'd have no birds at all
anyway, I officially opened the outdoors side of the aviary at 9'00 this morning. There's still some decoration to be done, and some re-arrangements once the birds start "using" it, but so far, only 3 of them have been brave enough to go outside. At 11'00 am it was the bluecap. At 14'00 the two owl finches. Now it's 3,30 in the afternoon and the gouldians are still inside, not showing any interest at all (or being too scared)
These photos were taken this morning just after I opened the window connecting to the indoors aviary. I have even removed the window panels, so they have a better view, and hang some spray millet to tempt them, but no way... (I guess if the window was to be opened by mistake, they'd fly away in a matter of minutes!)

Re: mixed small aviary?
It looks wonderful!!
Just wait until they find out that it's nice out there. You won't be able to get them back in...
When I built my aviary and put the budgies and finches in that I had housed in cages before, it took the budgies about 2 weeks to start exploring. They were literally sitting on the same few branches huddled together most of the time before they started flying around. I had to even move the food closer to them because I was afraid they might rather starve to death than venture out...
How do you go into the outside area? Is there a door or do you climb through the window?

Colorin, such a beautiful environment you've created for your birds! I love the picture of you working on your aviary!! What a great hubby, too, doing the cooking while you work.
If I were a finch I would love to find a home in your beautiful aviary.
Great job and thanks so much for sharing your pictures with us!

Re: mixed small aviary?
hi
you should be really proud of all the work you have put in,it looks really good the whole setup, the birds will love a few rays on thier feathers and they will build muscle and bone flying about in that big space...there is nothing more pleasing when you see all your birds bite the bullet and decide to venture out, pretty soon you will have to start putting nest boxes in there
well done

Re: mixed small aviary?
thank you all for your comments. Right now it's the bluecap the one enjoying it the most. He loves flying in and out,at an amazing speed.
And the blue of his feathers is sooo vibrant when the sun light bathes him! He's a truly beautiful bird!

Re: mixed small aviary?
hi
when i started my first aviary, years ago i had only one option of getting the birds into the aviary outside i drilled a 4inch hole in the side of the shed leading from a row of breeding cages and all the ones who where chosen to go outside where put in this bank of cages with all the dividers removed so they could fly the full width of the shed( 8ft) and into the aviary outside this whole seemed hardly large enough but it was the biggest hole cutter i had but to watch them fly in and out of this hole without stopping or touching the sides was incredible to watch,i i never had one bird injured flying in and out its amazing how they judge these tight spaces without having to stop and think about it
