Can a Gouldian be paired with different species of finch?

Post by Kendra1 » Wed Jun 08, 2011 8:11 am

Hello,
We just lost a Gouldian finch male, who was closely bonded to his female. She is obviously lonely, and we are looking for another mate for her, for companionship, not for breeding. Because Gouldians are quite rare in our area, would another type of more commonly available finch (ex. Zebra, Society) be compatible with our Gouldian?
Hope you can help!

I am not sure where you are from, but ask this forum. Perhaps you don't know it but have someone closer than you think with Gouldians.

From what I understand Gouldians are not the cuddling type and although I'm sure they will like other bird company they won't pair up with another species for preening company etc. There are some species that can interbreed with Gouldians, so be aware of that and stay away from getting a "mate" as you won't want hybrids.

If you have to get another species of bird I would vote you find a female of a colourful type to add. So there will be no chance of cross breeding or fustration on the birds part.

Anything that's passive would be fine to be kept with your Gould - Society Finch, Owl Finch, Star Finch, would all be good choices :)

Thank you, Monique and Tiffany. I'm happy to know that our Gouldian will be compatible with a different species of finch, and that another female would be acceptable, too. There's not much chance of breeding--the Gouldians were in a large cage, and though the female laid eggs, she never sat on the nest. But she misses her mate.
BTW, I am located on Vancouver Island, Canada, in case any of you are nearby and have Gouldian finches. :)

Kendra, there should be tons of Gouldians by you. I know there's a bird mart in Cloverdale late in the year. Not sure if it's twice a year.
