Do you give them plenty of grit?

i have never seen this before but the babies look fine and healthy though.

It looks like the seeds are whole seeds and not been eaten properly by the parents. I whould give them extra soft food if they are eating it

Oh, goodness. I've never had, raised, or bred parrot finches before so I cannot comment on whether this is normal. However, I was under the impression that undigested seeds in poop meant either parasites or intestinal issues. I believe you said society finches were fostering these parrot finch babies? Have the societies been tested for campylobacter and cochlosoma? I would also check the poopology index (http://www.finchniche.com/a-poopology.php). I do hope and pray you find a solution for these special babies. Good luck. [-o<

P.S. I don't want to freak you out. Please wait for others, whom have experience with breeding parrot finches, to chime in. :!:

So.. if the seed is passing through undigested it could actually be a problem in either upper digestive OR lower digestive which makes it sort of a crap shoot in figuring out what the issue is.

More often it is an intestinal tract disease (protozoa, e.coli, etc.) that causes birds to have this "hypermotile intestine."

I certainly wouldn't ignore it even though the babies appear healthy now - the fact that they're passing undigested seed indicates a larger issue in the grand picture.

Do you have any medicine for controlling yeast? This would be my first course of action - even just adding citric acid to the water the parents are drinking. If after a few days of using that you see no improvement I would move to something stronger like Medistatin or Nystatin if you have it/can get it.

If that produces no change - I would consider a lower digestive issue and I would probably try to tackle it with Ronex - but I am NOT saying this is what YOU should do, I'm just saying this is what I would try.

Lumpy or Undigested food: Incomplete digestion, Giardia, hypermotile intestine.

Hope you can get them well soon!

I raise PF's... they are like all other finches with regards to their poop. Undigested seeds in ANY finch droppings are not good; Tiffany and the others are right on.

Good luck! :)

Congratulations! But I would caution you to continue with the treatments to make sure you get all the bad guys out of the system. It's better to be safe than sorry. Keep us updated. 8)

I just got a book, PARROT FINCHES by Mike Fidler. He said..Many successful breeders provide soft food for the first nine days after young hatch and then supplement this with the provision of soaked seed from days 9 to 35. I started to give sprout seeds their 7 days old.....That's why they couldn't digest good???? He dosen't explain why after 9 days....Oh, I need to read and research more!!! and learnd from you guys :)
