Zebra's and bengalese don't really destroy plants. But canaries really do, very quickly, and will strip any thing you put in really.
So the bigger the plant the better. There are loads you can use really. I have conifer and a maple tree in my avairy which they love playing in. On the floor i have loads of grasses which they like to use as nesting material too.
But i don't keep canaries any more so my plants grow ok.
Another thing i do is have a big pot and cover it with wire, then sprinkle salad seeds in it, so when the seeds grow they can eat the salad but only as far as the wire, that way the salad can keep growing back, otherwise they would just eat it to the floor.
Canaries can be a pain with plants, when i had them they ate whatever i put in, but if they had a constant supply of juicy salad leaves or chick weed etc may be that would pre occupy them from eating the other plants.
