Could she just be under the weather? She seems quite content to be warm.

Other good news....my cutthroat is sitting on her eggs! Although being a new bird owner, I'm not sure how old the eggs are...but I will just wait it out - see what happens.

So happy to hear your hen is feeling much better! Hopefully she keeps feeling fine and not puffed up! it really pays to put them somewhere warm when you think they're not feeling well. Oh, and soon to be cutthroat babies! I think they are a beautiful bird! =D>

Well, I don't think my society hen is going to make it :( I felt bad because of the male singing to her from the large cage, so I put her back into the large one to be with him. She's been sitting in the bamboo nest all evening last night and this morning she was still there. The male keeps going in there and poking at her and what seems like grooming her, so I'm not sure what to make of that.

She's still panting and just not moving at all. :(

Really really sorry. It never gets easier to see a birdy go. But next time, please please please keep any suspected ill birds in their quarantine. I know it's easy to get weak in the knees and put them back when they are frantically calling their loved ones (trust me, I've been there many times) but the additional conditions provided in a quarantine setting has the potential to save lives.

You worked feverishly yesterday to get the quarantine together while you were at work. You did what you could -- my condolences are with you. :(
God is my redeemer and it is through Him I have found eternal happiness. I am grateful, I am blessed, and I am truly loved. I wish all this and more for all members of our finch forum family. May you all be blessed and highly favored. <3

So sorry for the loss of your hen. yes, sometimes they do better when they are in the heated hospital cage so you think it's okay to put them back. When my society was sick I really wanted to put him back but I kept him in the cage for almost a month just in case. I was lucky but you can't save them all. Keep an eye on the hen's mate in case it's contagious. I hope it's not.

Yeah, he seems good. Went and got another Society last night and they seem to be getting along.

How do you tell the difference between a male & female society? I think we ended up with a male as he's singing up a storm. Is there a way to tell just by looking at them at the store?

If he is singing you are guaranteed that you have a male =D> =D>

If you wanted a girl and you picked out a boy, the pet store might swap him for another. The only way you can tell is if it's singing. I needed a hen but brought home another male. They let me bring him back and exchange for a girl. I was lucky and the second one was a girl.
