Sick Gouldian with Pics

Post by FinchFan09 » Wed Jun 15, 2011 11:16 pm

This is Peep. I picked her up at the bird mart this weekend. Unfortunately she hasn't been feeling well ever since she got home. Weak, sleepy, unbalanced. Right now she is in a hospital quarantine cage with a heat lamp. She was treated with Scatt this morning because I thought she showed signs of air sack mite. But what I think is ailing her is some intestinal issue as shown by her droppings. (Sorry for the poop pics)

And here are her droppings. What treatment advice can you all recommend?

If by chance you purchased from someone named Adrian, I would treat her with Amoxitex.

OMG, I hope we don't have another "victim". Someone should seriously ban this guy from marts. If anyone with any kind of ethics is running these marts, they seriously need to screen their vendors better.

Hi bugaboo5: Would you mind sending me a private message about what you're referring to? I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with this bird and any info anyone can offer would be much appreciated.

I PMed you, but I'm referring to the possibility of your Beep being a product of Adrian Castillo. There have been numerous people who have been victimized by this man. The fecal matter of your bird does not look good at all. I hope and pray you can treat her. [-o<

I completely agree! I know a few vendors who refuse to sell if they catch wind he's coming in. Hopefully the clubs will catch on.

Has anyone seen this kind of poop before? It almost looks moldy in appearance. There's definitely something wrong with this bird. Any recommendations for medications? Can we get feedback from our Gouldian connoisseurs? CandoAviary - Nixity - MLarue - DFCauley - LinOntario - lovemyfinch?

Let's all pray that this bird pulls through. Any suggestions would greatly help save this bird's life. [-o<

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, prayers, and concern. Peep's condition is about the same. Not any better, but not worse... which is positive I guess. The bad news is, the male red head, purple breast, yellow back gouldian I also purchased from Adrian is now also showing signs of illness!!  He looks thinner to me, losing energy where he had plenty, and I just noticed today that his droppings, when they landed, looked foamy!! Has anyone come across this before? I started both Peep and the male (which my wife has named Coco after Conan O'brien because of the red head) on Amoxitex this afternoon. I'm going to post pictures of both of them later tonight when I get home. I did notice that Peep's droppings didn't look so "powdery" or sandy if you will, they have some shape now but very watery. Pictures coming later. Thanks again everyone!

Here's an update on the birds tonight. They look about the same. Droppings are still very watery but as you can see, have some more shape. I started them on a 5 day treatment of Amoxitex this afternoon.

Here are Coco and Peep this evening along with their droppings:

I also uploaded a video to youtube. Notice the tail pumping by Peep:

Poor birds. It's really heart-breaking to see birds in such state and condition. Are they eating and drinking well? I'm optimistic and pleased to hear that Peep's poop is no longer that bizarre black puddle. If you purchased any other birds from Adrian, I would recommend you treat those birds as well - even if they seem active and appear fine. They are both beautiful birds - I pray they pull through for you. [-o< Please keep us updated on their conditions.

It looks to me in the first pictures like the poops are a result of gorging on charcoal, not sure what was available to the birds in the sale cage or what might have been offered to them before being brought for sale, but that's what it looks like to me.

The loose stools in the most recent picture aren't much better looking, though.
The butt/tail pumping is usually a sign of digestive distress (due to diarrhea, infection, what have you).
I would forego the Amoxitex.. it's way too over used and most of the time is not all that effective unless it's a very mild upper respiratory issue, but this seems a little bit more progressive than that.

The rest I'm going to PM you, because too many people have over active opinions on a) whether or not you should medicate your birds and b) who should be the one to offer advice etc.
I don't like offering advice anymore because it's only ever met with criticism. It's just a suggestion, if it doesn't work, I don't want to be made to feel responsible.

I [-o< your sweet birds recover soon! How heartbreaking to bring home two new birds only to have them fall ill! BTW- I was grateful for 'all' the advice and information everyone gave me when my little Society 'Uncle' became ill when I brought him home. Thanks to you all who helped me, he got well and is fine now. So don't give up hope for yours! Please don't worry about giving advice. Us newbies need it 8-[ !!! i didn't know what to do! and if there are people out there that throw in their negative 2 cents- don't worry about it! Most people just want to help.
