I just cut 3 * willow branches from our tree and stripped all the leaves off. Do I need to do anything special before I secure it to the cage?

How big are they? The reason I ask is that lots of people bake them for a short time to kill anything off. On large ones, I wash with a gentle bleach solution, rinse it extremely well and then dry in the sun.
