Re: Black Cheek
I've got him paired up with a fawn female, (who has some darker grey cheeks than a regular fawn does, some lovely caramel flanks and some dark barring on her chest) to see if I can get get some fawn black cheek babies...I don't know what her background is, so it'll be interesting to see what comes out!

Re: Black Cheek
The fawn female is only visual fawn. You need a male fawn or a male split to fawn to produce fawn offspring. The male carries the fawn gene.
I would still pair them to see what you get. You will most likely get some BC.

Re: Black Cheek
Thanks Cindy! So with this pairing I'll most likely get black cheek babies and then whatever is in the female's parental background?

Re: Black Cheek
BC is a ressive trait so it requires a gene from both mum and dad. So you will only get BC's if mum is carrying the BC gene to. If not all the babies will be normal split BC.
Fawn is a sex-linked Gene, a female Fawn will only produce Normal hens and Normal split Fawn cocks.
So unless they are split for any of these, 100% of the young will only show the Normal Grey trait. Trouble is you don't knoe if they are splits by looking you have to just try it and see.
I would still pair them up because all the babies will be split BC and cocks will be split Fawn so furture generations will be interesting.

Re: Black Cheek
Why don't you get a female BC, breed those and then pair your fawn up with one of the offspring. That would increase your chances of maybe getting the end result you want. I have a Fawn pair of zebras and a pair of BC...eventually I would like to pair a fawn to a BC to get fawn BC, they are so pretty.

Re: Black Cheek
Thanks for the tips guys! The end result I would like, is the same as you Cindy. But, at this time I don't have the room to keep that many fids...I'll see what I get out these 2 first, and then maybe get a new BC bloodline from somewhere else, and pair a female BC with a split Fawn male from my breeding results. Theres so many different combinations to choose from!
