It did not go well, she is so much smaller and her wings are not strong enough to get her up to the 4 to 5 month olds' level, her one wing is missing a few feathers. she hung on to the bars and spent a great deal of time at the bottom though she drank and ate with the older birds.
This separation may have to wait until she is able to be placed with young offspring from either the one pair with four older chicks in the box. She is back snuggling with the penguin in their mesh roosting area.

Re: Attempting to move a baby owl into a flight of young owl
Is it not worth leaving her in with the other owls?
As long as she can eat and drink she will be fine, maybe just put in a extra perch or two for her to use as stepping stones upto where the other owls are, thta way she will have a way get up there and motivation to get her flight better,if she is somewhere where she dont need work on getting better, she will always be a bit weaker wont she?
Well that is way I think anyway lol,did have a small baby that was not the best flier when I seperated her,she could not keep up with the other zebs in the flight cage, but after a few days she was fine and making new friends

Re: Attempting to move a baby owl into a flight of young owl
I've been in this spot before with a weaker baby owl and lost it. Her one wing is smaller than the other and I am not sure if it is due to feather loss. She was floundering very badly...the flight is 3 ft tall and she is very small compared to the hearter looking parent raised babies.
In about a week the ones in the nest should fledge out she may be better suited being in a 30 x 18 x 18 cage with them when they wean, at least until the wing feather grows or she gets bigger. She is so small I had to band her twice, the band kept coming off her leg unlike the other owls who had no problem with it.
Zebra chicks seem far hardier than owls....they are delicate until they get to a certain age, right around 4 to 5 months old.

I don't have any Owls but I'm glad you took her out
She's still young and small. Better to wait until the young chicks still in the nest can be with her.

Re: Attempting to move a baby owl into a flight of young owl
Trish...I am afraid if she tries to keep up with the she might injure herself, the others are very swift and she was overwhelmed. She was fine as long as they are gathered around and atebut as soon as they started the swift darting back and forth you could see she panicked.
The 4 older young are about between 4 to 5 months old...have to go back and check the records. they are really nice looking, bright, in good shape and probably ready to find a new home soon. Not to worry two more nest of babies to get ready for. The young hatchlings in the big flight can be heard today for the first time. The older young in the other nest are noisey and sound like a pack of squirrels.
