c. carduelis and warm weather.

Post by Rowdy Hotel » Sun Jul 03, 2011 5:20 pm

I'm thinking about building a few breeding cages outdoors for my european goldfinches and any other european birds I may get. My only concern is that during they summer we get the occasional heatwave where the temperatures exceed 90 degrees for a few days. Indoors I could keep them in a room with an ac but outside they would just have to stick to the shade. How tolerant are carduelis of 90 degree weather? I figured it would be ok for a few days seeing how they were wild caught in australia where it must be very hot at times (assuming they're from a warm place in australia, I realize it's a huge country).

not the ones we get here in the u.s except the for the parva's.
my e.g.f's seem to do just fine in heat over 100 but, I think in mass you have to deal with the humidity?

They can handle it; just wet your aviary floor

They have nothing to do with C.c.parva, all E.G are the same and they all sing very well except the C.c.carduelis and the C.c.major.

My carduelis were wild caught birds I bought at a bird show. they were only $45 each which led me to believe they were probably WC in Australia since I have seen an influx of those birds this time for year around here. Are the Australian birds good singers? What subspecies are they most likely to be comprised of? My guess is britannica seeing how it was many of the English birds that were dispersed around the world.

What would wetting the aviary floor accomplish? I was actually considering building them cages with metal grate on the bottom to keep them from picking through a damp floor and picking up diseases.

Hi,I am from Australia and know all about hot days. What you have to think about is where you position your cages outdoors.Under verandas, pergolas or sheds can become a lot hotter than the actual weather conditions.Aim for shaded afternoon sun and on the really hot days I offer baths and keep an eye on them regularly for heat stress.Change their drinking water two three times if you can.I also have a temperature gauge next to the cages and if it gets over 38 degrees I take them indoors for a few hours till it cools down a bit just to be safe.

I thought you can't bring in or out any animals from australia, so how come you kept on saying that the bird you have is wild caught in australia? Just out of curiousity.

Why would Australia ever ban the export of the intrododuced carduelis? I can understand them banning the export if they're trying to prevent the spread of a bird disease but if that's not the case they need to round up and ship out as many carduelis as they can. I don't condone buying wild caught birds normally but when they come from somewhere where they are introduced you're actually probably doing the species a favor by removing them from the wild. the damage has already been done by introducing in the first place, might as well export them and create a market if they can't be eradicated effectively.

Because i don't want to open a new topic just for one picture i decided i will post on this one! I live in Europe and I always see European goldfinch almost everywhere: In parks, in the forest... Last wknd i went to the seaside 200 km away and there i snapshot one interesting couple! What is more interesting is that after 1 sec i took the photo they did the loco-loco thing! They mate just 1 meter above me!
It's always interesting, because first i hear the song and then i watch for them to see where they are! I guess the same it's on australia with gouldian finches or in Asia with javas...
