Green Singer chicks banded and then fledged
Just thought these guys to too cute not to post. Two perched up with dad who was NOT happy about the camera and the third on the floor still. He'll join his sibs real soon.

What type of band is on their leg? It doesn't look like the blue 2011. Is it a family split? Is it a different closed band? Also, what size did you use and at what age? I have GS fledges too and more coming, so just wondering. Thanks.

That would be a 2011 AAC band, size D, and banded at fledgling.
AAC would be the Avicultural Advancement Council of Canada, our colour this year is silver.

Congratulations Liz...they are so sweet!!!
Can I ask permission to print out your picture and write in big letter "Get producing, look what Liz's GSs did" and tape it to my GSs cage?

Cindy,
You reminded me of a question about GS pairs. Mine have incubated three clutches, but only two babies survived. They want to nest again, but I took out the nest to give them a break. Should I let them continue? They have had a two week break so far.

Cindy - thank you and sure! Just tell your GS that my GS have the 3 juveniles from their first clutch still in the cage with them - it's one BIG happy family now!!cindy wrote:Congratulations Liz...they are so sweet!!!

I'll butt in and answer for Cindy - I would let them nest again. I did not remove the nest when the first 3 chicks fledged and the parents laid eggs again, right away. Now I don't want any more GS chicks (6 is enough for now) so I removed the nest. The newest 3 chicks do not go into it at all.finchmix22 wrote:Cindy,

Very good looking chicks.
I bet the fledgeling on the second picture is a male.

You're on Igor! If it is a male I'll buy you a coffee at the fall Canadian Finch Meeting!! His band number is 124 so I'll keep an eye on him. Though it may take longer than 3 months so I might owe you the coffee in May 2012!ikhom wrote:Very good looking chicks.![]()

Now to what do you contribute your certainty that it is a male? Is it due to the NO spots on his breast/neck or the brightness of the yellow on his beak and neck?

Re: Green Singer chicks banded and then fledged
Liz,
I was reviewing my pictures and came to the conclusion that in half of the cases it is possible to sex the fledglings of GS for sure. When the necklace is thin, in one line it is a male, if marking extend to the lower chest it is a female. For the rest it is a guess.
Examples:

two females and a male on the right

a male

a female
