I have six males and one hen in my Society cage. Unfortunately, all the juvies turned out to be males. So, my hen just sticks to her mate, although the other males try to get her attention, she just ignores them and flies away. I've heard they sometimes pick a mate and will not transfer, but Society's are usually social and not that picky. I think my hen is just overwhelmed with all the men. I am looking for another hen to take off the pressure. LOL. I too think a dear diary thread would be fun and entertaining. Although, you're right there may be too many long posts and that could clog the system?? IDK.

Too bad we don't live closer. I have that female you want and in breeding condition. Just answered your other post. Maybe a dear diary thread could be done but with restrictions, like a certain amount of lines (counting the number of spaces is nuts).

They only lay 1 egg a day, so if you found 2 eggs, then both hens are laying. Obviously the one that did not mate is not fertile. But who knows, they may have mated before you got them.

There is about a 5 day period between mating and the egg being laid. So if they laid today, they mated about 5 days ago.

Time to get a nest for them.
Depending on the cage you have, I recommend a outside hanging nest box. These are easier to work with, as you don't have to reach inside the cage to do any nest maintenance.

And get the LARGE size. The small size is too small for societies.

While you are at PetSmart, pick up a bag of Orchard Hay. Then partially line the nest, so they have a headstart on the nest. But, since they are laying right now, you may have to line the nest and NOT put any hay in the cage. The problem is if they lay eggs, then put hay on top of the eggs, the eggs will never get incubated.

I have a nest box and hay in the cage already. As I am writing, the male and female are so happy and animated and singing. I did the right thing. I'm now done and going to put my feet up and enjoy them. Lyn

i need help about banglese finch...i have a pair of banglese in a cage of size 3*2. This pair is breeding. i wanna buy Shafttail Finch. can banglese and Shafttail Finch live together in one cage ?

I would honestly not mix society and shaftail`s in a cage, expecially if they are breeding.
A large aviary might work to have them living together, but never breeding together. Shaftail`s can get agressive when breeding.

Also, a 3x2 ft cage is only for one pair. They will fight if overcrowded. I'd splurge for a larger flight, if you think you want to add more finches, as most of us finchaholics have done. LOL.

You know, my ex-husband is from New Jersey and we used to go there twice a year when we were married to visit the in-laws. I loved going to New York City and the "shore" as he called the "beach" (to me). But, since my children may want to visit their cousins etc up there, maybe I'll get a chance to go to New Jersey and I can look you up. "The best laid plans of mice and women." LOL. Who knows?

I am a Texas at heart, but was a military brat, as my father was in the Air Force and we moved a lot until I was in 7th grade, when we stayed in Texas until I graduated college. My ex was from Bayonne New Jersey, which is across the river from New York City. So, he sounds like a New Yorker rather than someone from Jersey. So funny. I just happen to have inlaws on my brothers side that live in Texas. How weird is that. Bayonne is the NY of NJ, if you know what I mean. I was born in NY and lived there until I was 10. 40+ years later living my life in NJ I was born a NYer and will always be a NYer.

Wow, as they say, "It's a small world after all." LOL. Where in Texas are the inlaws? I live about ten minutes from DFW airport. My brother lives in Houston and my parents live in San Antonio. What part of New Jersey are you living in now?

Don't know where they live, but I'm in East Brunswick. (they call it central jersey, but it really isn't). Princeton is actually central. We are living in a crater. lol

I had 3 societies to begin with, two males and one female. I just let them raise a clutch together and all was well. "Uncle" the third wheel in my trio helped incubate and feed. They were happy in their threesome and I swear some of those chicks look like Uncle, not dad. Consider leaving the male with both girls. Chances are he will mate with both and you'll still get the chicks you want. Also, your girl won't be lonely.

I found 2 eggs in her nest this morning!!! I'm thrilled!
