You get the prize Janine - they are definitely two females. Males will have a much larger area of colour on their heads.

Here's one of my male red faced Stars. See the difference?

I'm also going to move this to the Neochmia sub-forum (for Star finches).

I am posting a picture of my hen and cock YF Stars. The pic is not too big, but you can see their face coloring.

Looks like 2 hens to me. But I have had males that look like female before.

I agree that it looks like two hens, but as JohnBoy said, you can have a male that doesn't have a good mask, so will look more like a hen. Liz's male is a perfect example of a male with a really good mask, the mask should extend beyond the eye on males.

Only males sing, and Stars are usually not hesitant to sing, so if either or both of them sing, then you have poorly-marked males. If neither of them sing, then you for sure have two hens. The bird on the right looks like it might be Isabel.

I have a similar question. What are your thoughts on this one? I was told when I got it that it is a male. I have it paired with a yellow female. They put out eggs like it is going out of style, but they are all infertile. I know that the yellow face is definitely a female. I just can't tell if it is one laying eggs or both. Now that I am thinking about it, I don't remember a whole lot of singing either. My other yellow face male star (Hollywood) drowns out everyone else. Any thoughts?

Well now, I think the 'pair' I purchased may be hens, also. :( But, they are beautiful birds and have a happy home. Perhaps someday their Prince Charming(s) will come along.
