Gouldian double factor vs. single factor purple breast

I have been playing with the genetic calculator for Gouldians that I downloaded. I find that when I pair a rh wb gb male gouldian with a rh pb yb female gouldian that if I put in single factor purple for the female and then try again with double factor purple that the sf will give me more variation on the possible offspring for the back body colors. Does sf purple mean that one of the parents was a white or lilac breast then and that a df purple mean that both parents were purple breast? The df vs sf then affects the back body color also it looks like. Can anyone clear this up for me. Thank you!

I'm not sure on chest colors, but I know if you have a normal male that is double factor for redhead, then all the offspring will be redhead if bred to a blackfaced female. If he's only a single factor redhead, some of the offspring will be blackface. I think it breaks down to a single factor being Rb bred to a bb female will result in some offspring being Rb (single factor) and some being bb (black face). If the male is double factor then he's RR (to bb) so all the offspring will be single factor redheads (Rb).

So I suspect its the same with chest color. Picture it like brown eyes and blue eyes. My father is a 'single factor' brown eyed man...his genetics are Bb...carrying one gene for brown and one for blue. Because of this, he has brown eyes. However, since my mother is blue eyed (bb) I have blue eyes...I got the b from my father and the b from my mother, whereas my older sister has brown eyes...B from Dad and b from mom...which is proven due to her having two brown eyed children and one blue eyed child.

In short, double factor...in my understanding, and I'm still learning genetics myself...means the parent has two copies of a dominant gene. Single factor means only one copy of the dominant gene is present and the parent can throw recessives if properly paired.

So in response to your question, for a bird to be a double factor it either has two double factor parents, or two single factor parents...RR and RR or Rb and Rb, leading some offspring to be RR and some to be Rb and some to be bb.

I'm not sure which calculator you're using, but yes, sf means that the bird had one parent with a purple breast (and is visually purple herself) and one parent with either white or lilac. If the bird is split to white, with your white male you now have the opportunity of getting white breasted chicks. A male with a purple breast will be visually green, and a male with a white breast will be yellow.

The calculator I like to play with was created by Carlos Matos and is freeware. You can email him at C_Matos@bigfoot.com to ask for a copy. He uses Crystal's illustrations. (And yes, it's gouldians only, though I know there is another zebra calculator out there somewhere.)
