Sprouting some seeds!

Post by stargazerwolf » Tue Jul 19, 2011 1:54 pm

So long ago I was reading about sprouting seeds and see that many people on here do it as well. Never thought about the best way to do it. Well everyone seems to have their own method and not sure how long it takes most people to get the seeds going but I found a perfect way to do it! I took a tupperware container, wet a folded up paper towel (wet enough to drip), placed a handful of seeds and spread them out, then spritzed the seeds with some more water, then I took another wet folded paper towel and placed it over the top of the seed. We've been getting 100 degree weather lately here in Nebraska so I placed the lid on top the container, secured only two corners so it wasnt completely air tight, and set it out on my balcony. Well the container has only been out there overnight and already the seed is slightly sprouting, because of the lid the paper towels are still wet, its like a mini greehouse! Humidity stays inside.

Just had to share because I'm glad to see it worked and thought for those having trouble with molding and such maybe they could give it a go. It has been staying probably in the high 70s most nights these past few weeks so it is constantly in heat rather than in the A/C. And certainly no mold yet, I'm going to just let them sprout a few days and then my zebbies get a nice snack! Has anyone tried this way before? You could do a lot or a little depending on how big of a container you use!

That's an excellent way to do it but you may get mold if the bag is sealed for more than a couple of days and the seed will start to rot as it needs oxygen to grow. As long as you open the bag and keep it moist it should do fine. Another thing you could use is the coconut fiber as matting just be sure not to cover the seeds any deeper than 1/4" or they will not be able to make it to the surface.

They're in a tupperware container not a bag, and like i said only two corners are pressed down, so some oxygen can get in. I removed the paper towel that was covering the seeds and only left the one they are sitting on in there, there is plenty of condensation to keep things just moist enough, but I thought with two wet paper towels it would keep it too moist. I dont know where to get coconut fiber, I've never seen it in any stores around here, but the seeds seem to be sprouting fine the way I have it set up.

I'd be concerned about mold using this method regardless

Cocomoss - what I meant - is what is used as liners for hanging planters and the alike.

Check out the link below to get an idea - you can find this locally for less I am sure.
