Cheese & Tuna

I've read in books and online in several aces that you can feed your finches fat-free cheese as well as tuna packed in water.

I know that birds are lactose intolerant but have read that is long as it is done very rarely and with fat-free cheese, they can occasionlly have some. I've heard other people say no and I'd be a little concerned with salt as I read that they're not supposed to have salt.

I'd have the same st concerns with water-packed tuna, unless you can buy it unsalted.

Anyway, what is the verdict, can I give my birds cheese and tuna packed in water? Is it safe and has anyone tried it?

Personally I would avoid cheese. I would be concerned with spoilage, molding (which can lead to microtoxins). Tuna...the quality of canned tuna is questionable. If wanting a good protein source try grated boiled eggs as a treat.

If you are feeding pellets, seed, veggies and egg once in a while that is pretty good. Caution to much protein like anything else can cause some issues.

maybe the last post was prompted by my post of giving my birds tuna sandwiches........but i did point out it was a joke there is no way i would feed my birds that just incase there is any misunderstandings

I think both of those are risky and unneccesary choices of food. Cheese is more likily to cause problems than tuna, but tuna has most of the same nutrients as boiled eggs or eggshells, which are a safer and eisier way to get your finches protein. Tuna also smells after a while

I was just giving my opinion to a question flrancho asked.

(side note...the qulity of canned tuna is not what it use to be!!! and the cans are smaller...just a consumer gripe!)
