Vitamins, supplements & such

Post by flrancho » Fri Jul 29, 2011 9:59 am

Since I've had birds I've just always given them a standard bird seed mix, a cuttlebone and maybe some occasional treats. I was recently told though that I should be giving my finches vitamins and supplements, especially calcium & vitamin D? I've never done this, what kind of vitamins, supplements and other food additives do you give your birds?

I thought this supplement looked good(http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... oduct+Type), but really, if you feed your bird a good pellet, millet, and some green food and fruit they should be fine. Cuttlebone contains calcium, so that isn't an issue with your finches.

If you feed hard boiled eggs they will get all they need that isn't found in their normal seed and treat diet. If not then I would feed a vitamin supplement with D3 included.
