Question in regards to societies...preventive meds
The birds I recently adopted have been in quarantine in the back room for almost a month. A pair of shaft tails, lavanders, and socieites.
All is going well and I would like to move them out of quarantine, The birds were all housed together when the previous owner had them, the male shaft tail was moved out of the cage since he is a bit more aggressive towards the female. Lavendars are in their own cage now.
All were treated with RonivetS for 7 days, probiotics, dewormer, probiotics, Cocci-care for 7 days probiotics....is there anything else I need to treat with due to being housed with societies before adding the shaft tail to my shaft tail population? I have medistatin but am reluctant to use it as a preventivie. Should I retreat with Ronex (Ronivet S) one more time?

That's more than I treat any new bird with. If they look fine after all this time in Q - they should be okay.

Re: Question in regards to societies...preventive meds
I have to agree with Liz, if they all look healthy they have had enough meds
s it just me
or do societies seem to be getting a bad rap

s it just me

Just want to make sure since the origin of some of the birds are unknown.

I would presume and hope if there was anything to be concerned about that it would show up within 4 weeks. If you are unsure at all - then wait another 2 weeks.cindy wrote:Just want to make sure since the origin of some of the birds are unknown.

Two of the birds I know who they came from but the others the breeder they may have got them from was questionable....they all are eating and doing great...It should be fine but nerves take over whenever bring someone new into an established flock!!! Know what I mean???

Re: Question in regards to societies...preventive meds
I have not, I may add it to the regime. I do not have gouldians but understand that air sac mites are not just isolated to that species.
Not sure what is best to use as a preventitive. Is there something that is best to use in the water?

Re: Question in regards to societies...preventive meds
Thank you Janine...I'll order some and treat everyone. Is one round of it as a preventive enough. do you treat everyone every 6 months. Since I don't own gouldians and have had most of my birds for a while is twice a yr suggested?

Re: Question in regards to societies...preventive meds
I honestly only treat while in quarantine, I have never had a reason to treat any of the birds as preventative as I have never seen symptoms (knocking on wood)

I've never had a problem, do I need to treat as a preventative?

Re: Question in regards to societies...preventive meds
I would treat the birds in quarantine. But, IMHO, I would not treat my other birds if there are no symptoms. In my opinion, any meds are hard on a system so no need to play with fire.
