What kind of finch is this?

Post by Cody » Sun Aug 14, 2011 10:02 am

I was doing work on someones house and she gave me a couple finches. I have no clue what kind they are and when me and my girlfriend went to look it up we couldn't figure it out. The lady mentioned sandpiper finch but I couldn't even find something called that on google

And I was told the male is the one with the brown stripe just under his wing

Okay thanks =]

We were kinda thinking that is what they were but at the pet store we checked this morning (while getting them food) most of them there were the brown colored ones and one like ours in the zebra finch cage, so we weren't sure if it was misplaced or that's what we had lol

They are in a tiny little cage so we are going to be finding them a larger one so they can fly around a bit more and the lady told us they were a mating pair, so now we have to research all about that too

Thanks for the quick answers!

Looks like a very pretty (CFW) Chestnut flanked white pair!
Congrats! =D>
Zebra finches come in many colors!
I think there are over 50 color varieties!
Pairs should not breed more than 2-3x in a year,
so have that in mind
They have to get cuttle bone every day.
And they will love hard boiled eggs!
You can also give them for snacks, fruits and veggies,
but dont give them Avocado, it will kill them!
They also love taking baths every day

Okay thanks Vargur, I had no idea there was this many kind of finches until I was trying to figure out what kind ours were lol. Also didn't know that about the breeding so that's good to know.
We got ours a brand new cuddle bone while we were at the pet store yesterday picking up their food because their old one was looking pretty lame along with some millet

As far as the snacks can it be as much as they want or just certain amounts?
We have 5 chinchilla's and I know their treats can only be in small portions or it's bad for them is the only reason I ask

Well, I give our birds not much (and not so often)
fresh veggies and fruits..
maybe one, two times in a week..

They love Alfa alfa sprouts!
and I give them carrots, apples,
fresh grasses from our garden,
grapes, broccoli and parsley.
I cut everything down into small
pieces and give them in a small amounts.
If something is left couple hours later I will take it
away so it does not spoiles..
