Broken Toe

Post by Raleighwheels » Tue Aug 23, 2011 4:36 pm

My girlfriend woke up today to find one of our societies hanging by his toe. He was caught on the handle on the outside of the cage. She was able to free him, but his middle toe is mangled. I can see what looked to be the bone sticking out. She moved him to the hospital cage where he was playing dead for a while. He now is eating and drinking, but he cannot perch very well. He ie also giving off some contact calls from time to time. She wants to bring him to the vet, but I'm afraid it will stress him too much, and the vet won't be able to do any thing since he is so small. Is there anything we can do for him? We have the food and water low and a light on him. Is an infection possible?

So sorry, we have all had our freak accidents. As for infection, I think he should be fine as long as there was no bleeding. I have also had a few get themselves hung up. What I do is make sure that all nails have been clipped, give heat source along with food and water low(which you have already done) and give them some time. All have healed perfectly in time, and you wouldn`t even know that they had had any sort of injury.
Speedy recovery [-o<

Thanks so much for the advice. He is perching on his water dish now, but the injured foot is hanging off the side. I tried to get a good look at it without stressing him, and as far as I can tell it is just his middle toe that is messed up. I am pretty sure that I am seeing the bone sticking out too. There isn't any blood, but it is kind of red looking, which could just be from the skin that was torn. We are trying to stay away from the cage as much as possible so that he doesn't feel the need to move, except to get food and water. He is doing that thing where they puff up and rock back and forth, but I'm sure it is just because of the pain. Hopefully the skin goes back soon or he just loses the toe so it isn't a bother to him anymore.

Hope he feels better soon!...It is so sad when they hurt themselves and there is little we can do but make them comfortable and let them heal

Thanks for all the well wishes!

A bit of an update. He is getting along a bit better. He is eating and drinking just fine and sings all the time. He is also perching a little better now. Sometimes he sits on both of his feet. We can tell that he hates being alone in the hospital cage, but we think it is best to just wait and see what happens to the toe before he is put back into the cage.

The poor guy's toe is coming off now. Most of it has fallen off, but there is still some bone sticking out. Once the skin heals up we are moving him back into the main cage. He is perching just fine now, but we are being extra cautious.

hi
thats what i expected,it usually turns black and then withers, its good that you didnt get any infection with it,all a vet would have done was to clip the broken toe off and charge you for it as soon as the skin grows over the bone it will be fine just make sure it doesnt peck it whilst it is getting better.in future make sure that all thier claws are clipped well back because the way thier claws grow like little hooks make them prone to getting hung up on anything that is sticking out

ken
you can always tell a yorkshireman, but you cant tell him much

Another little update on our society:

He has a piece of bone still exposed on the middle toe. Last week, it was swollen at the knuckle and the bone started turning a dark color. My girlfriend and I thought that maybe the swelling was the body trying to cut off circulation to the bone in order to kill it so it could be detached. This week, the swelling has gone down, but the darkened bone is still there. Hopefully it will fall off soon so he can be reunited with his mate.

Glad to hear this update and that the swelling has gone down for the most part. I'm sure skin will soon cover the bare spot. [-o<
