My new old cage!

Post by andalcam » Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:01 am

When I first started looking for a flight cage I thought it would be very easy to find the perfect one. Well, it wasn't. The ones I really liked were all in the states and shipping was more than the cost of the cage plus, I didn't want to have to pay duty and other outrageous fees from the courier service.
I had purchased a cage on Ebay a few years ago from California and was very lucky to find a seller that charged a small fee for the cage and a huge fee for the shipping. So I purchased this cage for $4.99 and paid $250 for shipping. No extra fees because the invoice said $4.99 was the purchase price.

I love this cage but it just wasn't right for my finches. I decided to remake the cage to better suit my needs. First I took the back and bottom off. I unhooked the sides of the cage and brought them to the front. My cage front grew from 30" to 72". Big difference! I set the front onto the fake brick panel and drew around it with a marker. I cut the back out with a jigsaw. I decided to keep the wire top that came with the cage but put a solid bottom in and solid sides and made solid panels for the rest of the top.
This is what I have now.

I have 6 CFW's in this cage and I think they are very happy. Any ideas on what else my cage needs? I know it is far from perfect but I am a single mom and did everything myself.

That is absolutely ingenious. 8)

Your cage looks fabulous and dare I say it perfect!

Questions.... how did you attach the solid additions to the cage.
Do you still have a tray under for easy cleaning?

I used screws to secure the cage front to the bottom and sides and just used zip ties for along the top because of the thinness of the wood panel. The pile of ivy sitting on the top of the cage is going along the outside top to hide the tie. I just haven't got to it yet.
I put in a solid bottom as it was easier than making trays to fit. I don't find cleaning this cage any harder as I always kept paper on the top of the wire anyway. I always found it hard to scrub the bottom wires to keep the poo off. Now a small hand broom and a damp cloth do the trick.

Hey! You pretty much built a cage yourself! Make me think you didn't have to buy from California.
Sure looks great.

I really like the decorative little fence on the inside of the enclosure! Makes it extra cute =D> What are you using for a base? It looks really nice too.
