We lost one of our owls this morning. It all happened so fast! I noticed two days ago that she had gotten a little bit fluffy and wasn't as attentive as usual. She was eating plenty of seed and drinking. Her poop was coming out mostly water, but sometimes seeds. We gave her the normal dose of Ronivet 1 scoop to 1 gallon of water. Provided a lamp, and a heater. Also a small bit of garlic water. She wasn't doing to well last night, wobbly hopping from perches and sometimes falling. Really sad.
We had treated both of our owls for air sac mites and had already also given Ronivet a few weeks prior because the other owl showed similar, but less serious symptoms.
Our other owl, Rory is still crying for Dani. So sad.
I'm not sure what we could have done different? Did we misdiagnose? The symptoms all seemed to describe canker on ladygouldianfinch.
Should we continue giving Ronivet to the other birds?

Re: Poor Owl
Haven't experienced this myself so I can't comment on proper treatment.

Re: Poor Owl
I just went through something similar and it took about a month to get my finches well again. In the process, I lost three finches. I finally gave Ronivet 12% and Amoxitex together for a week, followed by Probiotics. That was the recommendation from ladygouldian.com. Good Luck with your flock.

Re: Poor Owl
Have you considered Coccidia? The description you gave sounds like that. A protozoa that infects the body, eventually killing the bird. They Will eat.. but they can't digest. Hence the watery poops with undigested seed.

Unfortunatly, I don't believe that Ronivet is the appropriate med. Use Coccicare instead. You can also speak with a local vet, there ARE meds that can be used to treat them. I am going into work today (vet clinic) and will ask mine what he gave me last time that worked so well.
I had this in my flock even After I'd placed my new birds under quarantine and waited out the month. My own flock was devastated before I understood what was causing it. Please really research the symptoms and be perpared to treat your entire flock if it is coccidia. Sorry - I'm not trying to frighten you, but if this is what's happening, they need to be treated asap.

Re: Poor Owl
May also add that if all you have is Ronivet 6% it is not strong enough for finche it is allowable to 4x's the powder to the 1x's the ammonia of water. You can mix amoxitex as Deborah mentioned into the Ronivet. What color was her urine an stool?
I would call ladygoulian.com for the appropriate medications needed.

Re: Poor Owl
Thanks everyone.
I'm going to keep a close eye on the other birds and make sure they are not showing similar symptoms. I will look in to getting some other medications also, to have on hand in case another one starts to get sick. It's scary how fast it happened!
The droppings were mostly clear, with a slight yellow tint. The feather around her backside were a little stained yellow also. Although she was eating a lot, she still felt a little bit light and boney when handling her the night before.
Thanks again.
