Seed Hoppers Save Money!

Post by fabulousfinch » Tue Sep 06, 2011 2:01 pm

With all this talk about high quality seed, which is more expensive, the first place you can offset the cost is by using seed hoppers. If you have not tried using seed hoppers they are the neatest thing since sliced bread!

They offer a constant supply of fresh seed to your birds and are more sanitary than using cups or plates as your birds can't walk or poop in their food. They also better contain the mess of seed hulls.

And they will cut your seed use by at least 50%, maybe closer to 75%. They will make a huge difference in the cost of feeding your birds.

Don't force seed hoppers on your birds cold turkey. My birds wouldn't go near them for about a week (finches are afraid of everything :D ). But after a couple of weeks your birds should be using them and you can then remove your normal feeding cups and plates and start saving money.

Another tip: Prime the seed hoppers by placing seed on the near side of the dam so your birds don't have to reach in as far for seed when they first start to explore them. Any finch can learn to use seed hoppers and they are better for your birds and your pocket book!

Bill :D

I use them and love them!! I do use a small dish of seed for pairs with young that are weaning until they get use to the hopper. They are great for pellets also!

They also make great a great front porch!

My birds would never use them - and then I read about someone who used them who filled them up before a vacay and something went wrong with the funneling and the seed got "stuck" and half the birds starved to death

Always have back up if you're leaving for vacation!

This is all I have in my cages for seed :D
Everything else goes into separate dishes, I actually use the cups we have to bake a mousse in for their veggie pate and terri cotta dishes for the eggfood.

That's all I am using in all my cages. I have two in the flight cage and one in each of the other cages. They work great for me. I use a straw to blow out the hulls from the drawer on the bottom and put the seeds left back in the hopper.

William I used Lady gouldian.com more than few times before ...without any problem. Im sure that many of members used this site. Fabulous Finch is good site too. I use this seed Hopper for all my cages..I love this. But like Tiffany said, you need to make sure it's not clogged.

I use a small bird feeder for outdoor birds in my large cages. The first one I tried had too small of a ledge where the seed sat and there was a lot of wasted seed, but the new one has a shallow dish all around that functions like the ones that were listed above.

I have ordered many times from www.ladygouldian.com, and a few times from her sister's site, www.ladygouldianfinch.com. Both have excellent customer service and ship very quickly. I have also ordered from www.rockportaviansupplies.com.
AND Bill (our forum member who originally started this thread) also sells them and his site is also reputable- www.fabulousfinch.com
I've been using these hoppers exclusively for over a year now and love them! My only complaint is that the plastic tab that clicks into the base has broken off on all of mine, but I just use a piece of masking tape on the back to hold it together :)
