Toast

Post by rcirmele » Sun Sep 11, 2011 5:03 pm

I try to make sure my Gouldians have a huge variety of foods at all times. Lots of fresh fuits and veggies (they love Kale and Brocolli), dried greens, seed, millet, treats, and pellets. They eat it all. I've recently found out that they like lightly toasted bread. I give them "Food For Life" organic sprouted grain and seed bread. Anything I should know about it? Will they get fat? They are still eating all different types of foods.

Ray, do you make the seed bread? You can try toasting that. Just remember if they are not really active that carbs are stored in the muscles, if the birds don't burn it of it turns to fat.

Their diet sounds good, if you were to offer toast offer it maybe one day a week at first and alternate the different foods along with their staple diet.

Me, make bread? Nope, I buy it from the local health food store. I was eating some one morning and thought it would be wholesome enough for them. Thanks, I think I'll cut it back a little. Don't want any weight watchers in the cage.

 That's funny. Louie loves to belly crawl under the cage waiting for handouts. I don't know why they like it so much.

From the finch info center:
"Whole grain products are also a valuable source of nutrients; they include: dry cereals, cooked cereals, crumbled whole wheat breads (stale or toasted). "

How toasted is toasted? I toast it until it is brown in the belief that it reduces the moisture content. Now we get into degrees of toastiness. :?

I think lightly toasted is probably sufficient, like you said, to reduce the moisture content. Maybe you should ask you birds how they lie their toast! Haha

I tried a little honey on a piece and they didn't seem to care one way or another. They're happy with plain dry toast. They're having to make do with freash broccoli today.

Holy smokes - WHY have I been throwing out the heels of the loaves of bread when I can toast them or let them go stale and give them to the birds. It's 100% whole wheat bread - is that okay for them or should I keep tossing the heels??? :? #-o

THE HEELS ARE THE BEST PART!! #-o #-o I just don't get it...my Hubby won't eat them either.

Anyhow, I would save them, freeze them, and then offer them as needed.

Don't give the Wonder Bread. Here's the flourless bread that I give them:

Only the best for my birds!

Cindy, are you serious about the french toast?

Same here - hubby and son won't touch the heels. That's great to hear - now I"ll toss the heels into the freezer.

... I meant the bread heels - not the son or hubby! [-X
