Frozen veggies?

Post by nelloyello11 » Sun Sep 11, 2011 9:08 pm

I know some people offer frozen veggies to their birds. How do you prepare them? Just thaw and drain? Or cook and drain?

I warm mine in a little boiling water, like you would prepare them for a person, just don't over cook them. They love the corn and peas. I resort to frozen when veggies are out of season and to expensive in the fresh veggie section or some of the veggies are brought in from Mexico and other contries that still use certain pesticides we no longer use here.

Yeah, I really want to try some broccoli with them. Something tells me they would go nuts over those little tree tops. But I am the only one in the house who eats broccoli, so I rarely buy fresh, because it goes bad before I can use it up.

they will love it...I use a whole head of broccoli with my crew (lost count!). They like the baby peas, corn, carrots. I don't know about your area but veggies bounce around price wise weekly here.

I microwave the veggies for 30 seconds. That just thaws them a little.

Mine love corn and carrots but don't like peas and broccoli (fresh or frozen).

Mine love fresh broccolettes. The little baby broccoli, like a sprout almost. I never thought of trying frozen veggies. I'll give that a go today.

I toss fresh veggies in the processor to mince them and then I freeze them in separate baggies to thaw and mix in with their eggfood later (when I pull out the frozen eggfood/soak seed mixture). I will buy 10+ heads of brocolli, etc when on sale and make up large freezer bags to hold me over the winter. You can open the bag anytime and take a chunk out to thaw and mix with the eggfood.

Well, the broccoli was an immediate hit with my more adventurous ones! The black cheeks are curious, but not bold enough to try it yet.
Now that I know they like it, I will try freezing some fresh stuff, like Liz does, for next time!

I use frozen peas and corn. the Societies love corn and peas but the Zebras aren't crazy about either. I warm them in water in the microwave then drain. My Societies go crazy for cucumbers as well. I mean CRAZY! I looked it up and they are literally packed with B vitamins, calcium, potassium and a bunch of other goodies. I don't feel bad about giving it to them because it's so good for them.

My zebras also go absolutely insane of cucumbers. They are pretty low calorie but offer a lot of good stuff so they get them often! I actually use them as "bait" when I'm trying to get them to try something new. They see the cucmubers and automatically dig in.

I just went to an exotic bird store in Brooklyn and they had half an ear of corn in each cage and the birds were going crazy over it!

I've had no luck with broccoli. And I thought that they would love sprouts. I'll just keep trying new things... they've gotta eventually like something else.
