What type of canary?

Post by Albinosilver » Wed Sep 14, 2011 3:51 pm

I'm thinking of buying a canary, because I've sold most of my finches and now have a cage left over. d:

So, I'm looking for a smaller sized canary, like a finch sized one. That's brownish yellow (olive?) in colour, (I'm not too fond of the bright yellow/red ones for some reason). The song doesn't matter much to me, I just want one for company. So, what's the best type/breed I could get? (Please include pictures, I'm not too familiar with the types.) And how much do they usually cost. This will be my first canary..

Thanks!

Sounds to me like you're looking for a Fife... they are smaller border canaries and not bright -- I mean they are not brightly colored!

here are some Irish canaries

Very pretty colour, but wow, she looks big, especially with such a long tail like that. Any smaller breeds, maybe?

Also, what price are they usually?

The smallest canaries out there are Fifes-- I know because I looked into it myself -- I wanted some that wouldn't be so much larger than my finches.

Look into the Fife if you want small. :)

Yup. I believe so although I haven't looked recently -- Singing Wings carries them and I've seen them in some online classifieds....

Toby is the expert but I think they might be referred to as "green". :) I have a green American Singer and he is cute as a button. It's a very nice color with lots of interest in the feathers. :)

I would call it varigated
would not say am a expert though
here a link with info on the fife,
http://www.canaryadvisor.com/fife-canary.html

they do tend to be bred for show so they are more a canary to watch/look at than a song one, although they can sing nice
