What's Really in Pet Food?

Post by MLaRue » Tue Sep 27, 2011 9:30 am

An interesting read that was shared on a yahoo group -

"Speaking of ingredients in highly-processed, extruded pellets, here is a bit of education on many pet food ingredients:"

Misty...I did a study for our rescue group a few years ago...it is amazing what "empty calories" and additives are in pet foods. There are know ingredients that are even allowed in human food that are used in pet foods....things like ►BHA (Butylated Hydroxysanisole), BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene), Ethoxyquin, TBHQ (Tertiary Butylhydroquinone), Sodium Metabisulphite.

BHA and BHT are know cancer causing preservatives.

If you want to read on further take a look at my WordBlog on dog foods....scary.

Mine are on Taste of the Wild canned and dry....I will not y Iams or any of the food you find in some of the stores based on what I discovered.

I switched over to Simply Nourish recently, a new brand that was introduced to PetSmart in the last few months.
I'm really pleased with it.. the canned foods you can tell are super fresh, they look good enough for ME to eat :) Whole carrots, peas, shredded chicken.. smells delish.

I've always been extremely picky over what I feed my pets.. and I'm always open to suggestions on better alternatives

Just read an interesting review of the product: maybe not as awesome as I thought :?

Still rated above average.. I think I would continue to offer the canned food ad-lib but I might consider switching to a different dry food.
I was feeding Eukanuba Naturally wild to my dog previously (first food she ever gobbled up) and Blue Buffalo to my cat.
